Millions of years ago on Cybertron, Sentinel Zeta Prime was the last Prime in existence. He commanded the Autobot defenses of Iacon when Megatron attacked Iacon. Megatron encountered Zeta several times via hologram. However, Megatron proved to be more than a match for the Autobot and defeated him. Zeta was taken to the Kaon Prison Complex, under command of Soundwave, to be tortured. Zeta managed to send an SOS to the Autobots, but only because Megatron allowed him to in order to trap Optimus, a field commander that had temporarily taken charge. Optimus led a team of Autobots into Kaon to rescue Zeta. The Autobots battled Soundwave who tried to kill Zeta by firing a shot at him, but Optimus jumped in front of Zeta to take the blow. Unfortunately Zeta was fatally damaged from his battle with Megatron, and the torture in the complex. Optimus took Zeta's body to the High Council of Elders who then appointed Optimus to become Zeta Prime's successor.

Zeta Prime doesn't carry the Matrix of Leadership and did not hand it down to Optimus when he dies - the Core of the planet Cybertron gave it to him.
Zeta Prime is playable in the second DLC pack for Multiplayer and Escalation.
