Ultra Magnus is the Autobot first commanding officer, leader of the Wreckers and former leader of the Elite Guard. Like all Autobots Ultra Magnus fled Cybertron when it was doomed and spent years searching for others and eventually arrived on Earth amidts Megatron's invasion and reunited the Autobots and assumed command in Optimus's absence. After Optimus returned, Magnus relinquised leadership to Optimus but he remained his second in command. Although Magnus had trouble adjusting to their family ways, especially with Wheeljack, he learned to losen up and became a more compasionate member of the team. Magnus was severely injured by the Predacon Skylynx and is currently, as of Transformers: Prime, in recovery.
During the war on Cybertron, Ultra Magnus served as one of Optimus' key lieutenants and one of the best military strategists. He was also a member of the Elite Guard. When the war began to wane, Magnus took the role as commander of a special Autobot faction called the Wreckers after being assigned by Optimus Prime himself, whose members included Bulkhead and Wheeljack. His leadership resulted in Wheeljack leaving the unit. As the Ark left Cybertron, Ultra Magnus and his team opted to stay behind on Cybertron to buy the Autobots time to escape from the invading Decepticons. Once the Ark was clear and through the space bridge portal, Ultra Magnus, like so many Autobots, took to traveling the stars alone in his own ship. Over the years, Ultra Magnus would search for other survivors but would have minimal luck; most times those he did find would just have little time to see them die at the hands of the Decepticons. When "Orion Pax" was recruited by the Decepticons to work on Project Iacon, Soundwave concealed the truth about Optimus Prime behind images of Ultra Magnus. However, Orion Pax was able to decode the actual image of the real Optimus Prime.
Ultra Magnus later found himself working along with the Dinobots, just prior to his departure from Cybertron. While he initially shared the sentiments of other Cybertronians in believing the Dinobots to be dangerously unstable, their performance on their joint mission convinced him of their nobility.
Arrival on Earth
During his travels, Ultra Magnus detected the energy burst from the Omega Lock caused by Optimus Prime and Megatron's battle on Cybertron and headed to its target, only to find Earth. He detected five Autobot energy signals and went to investigate. Upon arriving, he learned that Optimus Prime's team had scattered and their base was destroyed in the Decepticon invasion of Jasper. He also found Arcee and Jack Darby and greeted them.
When Jack said his name in amazement, Ultra Magnus told Arcee to have Jack watch his tone, while addressing him as the native. Arcee told Jack that Ultra Magnus was very by the book and to merely play along. After those authority reminders, Ultra Magnus told the two that he had detected Autobot life signals. After eyeing Jack for not referring to him as sir, Ultra Magnus told him and Arcee that he had detected five, with Arcee's being closest.
Elsewhere, Autobots Wheeljack and Bulkhead were attacked by the Predacon. As the two were on the verge of losing against it, Ultra Magnus was able to strike the beast down while in his ship long enough for the two to get aboard. After Arcee referred Bulkhead and Wheeljack to thank Ultra Magnus for their rescue, Ultra Magnus merely referred to them as soldiers much to their surprise. After Bulkhead told him that it was an honor, Ultra Magnus corrected him by reminding him to address him as "sir." As the Predacon fired at Ultra Magnus and the others aboard his ship, he told the Autobots and humans to brace themselves before he continued to pilot the ship.
Ultra Magnus was unable to destroy Predaking, but he was able knock the Predacon off the ship by using the sides of a cliff. Ultra Magnus and the Autobots travel to the remains of the Harbinger and there they reunite with Ratchet, Bumblebee, and Raf. After explaining details about communications and the Groundbridge in the Harbinger, Agent Fowler and June Darby arrive in Fowler's V-tol and reunite with everyone. After discovering that Optimus and Smokescreen are unaccounted for, Magnus takes command of the Autobots and shows the team his arsenal of weapons.
Assault/ Optimus Prime returns
Ultra Magnus addressed the Autobots, telling them that they remained vastly outnumbered and despite their ammunitions, did not currently possess the firepower necessary to infiltrate the Decepticon citadel of Darkmount. After Fowler told him that the military did, but could not get involved due to Megatron having lasers pointed at Washington, he concluded that the Autobots must infiltrate Darkmount, in order to nullify it's fusion cannons. When Wheeljack suggested that the Autobots would have to sneak past enemy lines Wrecker-style, Ultra Magnus told him that he could not deal with Wrecker-style back on Cybertron and that he refused to deal with it there.
Ultra Magnus told the Autobots that they required a means of thinning the Decepticons' ranks to even the odds, especially if they were to have any hope of completing the mission or surviving it.
Their plan was to have their human allies use their telecommunications to have the Decepticons come to their location while they GroundBridged back to the Autobot base, thereby removing them from Darkmount. Ratchet planned for Jack to use his voice and pretend to be one of the Vehicons reporting that they were under attack. After Jack spoke with no response from the Decepticons, Ultra Magnus told Ratchet that he remained unconvinced. Following their success in getting many Vehicons away from Darkmount, Ultra Magnus saw the Autobots off as they prepared to GroundBridge to the Decepticon citadel. While piloting his ship, Arcee reported to him regarding the numbers of the Vehicons still inside, telling him that security was tighter then expected. Ultra Magnus told her to keep them busy as he arrived on Darkmount himself, shooting down two Vehicons in charge of controls. Just as Ultra Magnus defeated the Vehicons, Megatron dropped in on him, shooting his cannon out of his hand with his own and venturing that he had intended to disarm his fusion cannons by disabling their power core. Ultra Magnus confirmed his suspicion and told him that he was standing in his way as he drew his blasters and began shooting. Ultra Magnus was soon defeated, Megatron stating that Ultra Magnus was "No Optimus Prime."
Following his defeat, Ultra Magnus was taken to the top of Darkmount, dragged by Megatron and thrown by him as well while the Decepticons rallied up the remainder of the captured Autobots. Megatron asked him where Optimus Prime was after being told by Starscream that he was not among the captured Autobots before the Autobot leader appeared before them, flying and in a new body as he attacked Megatron. In all the commotion, Ultra Magnus easily defeated Starscream and greeted his leader, telling him that he was looking rather robust before telling him that it was paramount that they disable the fusion cannons below. After Optimus flew off to do just that, Ultra Magnus reported to the Autobots and their human allies that Optimus was alive and well, causing much praise and joyfulness among the team.
Following the destruction of Darkmount, Ultra Magnus retreated with the other Autobots to the military base, which would serve as the new base for the team. After receiving a thank you speech from Agent Fowler, Ultra Magnus told Optimus that he would gladly relinquish command of the Autobots to him. Optimus in turn welcomed him to Earth and to Team Prime, the Autobots stationed on Earth.
Ultra Magnus and Wheeljack were sent to search through the rubble of the Autobot base. After returning from this mission, Ultra Magnus told Bumblebee, Arcee, Bulkhead and Ratchet that the two did not find much else in the rubble of their former base before Wheeljack came through the GroundBridge and questioned what he meant by not much before throwing his old lobbing ball at Bulkhead, whom was unprepared to catch it and avoided it, with the ball nearly hitting Miko. Immediately afterwards, Ultra Magnus questioned what Wheeljack was thinking before Wheeljack told him that he expected Bulkhead to catch it. Ultra Magnus told Wheeljack that as Optimus Prime's second-in-command, he had no intention of tolerating Wrecker behavior before Wheeljack lamented that somethings never changed, referencing their past together. Ultra Magnus tried to remind him that Optimus Prime assigned him to command him and the other Wreckers back on Cybertron and to get the loose cannon Wreckers under control. He continued by stating that an effective combat unit began with discipline before telling him that if he would not accept that, he was free to chose merely walking away, referencing him previously doing so on Cybertron. Wheeljack told him that if his ship were not destroyed, he would do that before walking off. While being stared at awkwardly by the other Autobots, Ultra Magnus asked if they had received any word from Optimus. Smokescreen later returned to the Autobot base, where he sported a new paint job and was asked by Ultra Magnus where he had been.
After Smokescreen revealed that he had been scanning for new paint jobs, Ultra Magnus told him that he could now look his best while stacking the empty cubes he had. Optimus Prime returned from his mission, bringing back the fossilized remain of a Predacon. After Optimus told the group they would need to divide their resources, Ultra Magnus was tasked with leading Bulkhead and Wheeljack. After being told of an upcoming mission in Scotland by William Fowler, Ultra Magnus asked what a kilt was after Fowler told them not to forget packing theirs. After asking Optimus, he called Bulkhead and Wheeljack by their names and told them to roll. As he walked away from the two, he saw the Forge of Solus Prime. He told his commander Optimus that he was aware of the many emotions tied to it and told Optimus that he would be honored to put it to practical use after Optimus gave him the okay to use it.
Ultra Magnus departed on his mission with Wheeljack and Bulkhead. While the ship began to place the three on the ground, Ultra Magnus told the two that according to their intel the Decepticons should be excavating for Predacon bones directly beneath them. After Wheeljack told Ultra Magnus that he was on it and began to roam, Ultra Magnus questioned Bulkhead if Wheeljack did not comprehend the chain of command previously established and continued by telling him that he did not authorize Wheeljack to advanced without proper cover. After Wheeljack charged at a Vehicon and managed to destroy it on his own, Ultra Magnus stayed close to his teammate before a multitude of Vehicons came out of the cave and attacked him, causing Ultra Magnus to retaliate and smash a few to the ground with the Forge of Solus Prime.
After taking out the Vehicons, Ultra Magnus cited their previous experience as a reason of why the Autobots wait for cover. After his statement, he soon discovered that Miko Nakadai had been brought along for their mission and questioned Wheeljack on what could have compelled him to bring her before questioning if his circuits were impaired. Wheeljack reasoned that Optimus had told him to lead the Wreckers on the mission and had assumed that he had meant all of them. This caused Ultra Magnus to question if he was mocking his commanding officer.
Wheeljack denied this and told Ultra Magnus of when Miko had saved his life from an Insecticon, causing Ultra Magnus to assume that they were outside of standard protocol. Ultra Magnus soon found himself searching for the Predacon bone, being asked by Miko if what she was holding was it before telling her that it was rock and continuing to walk. The group soon began to feel a quake around them, as rocks imploded around and they discovered the Predacon had returned, causing Ultra Magnus to tell the two to roll as he transformed into his vehicle mode and the three proceeded to drive away as the Predacon chased them, nearly being hit by a flamethrower before getting out of the tunnel. Though the Predacon was trapped, Ultra Magnus knew it would not be trapped forever and told his teammates that they would have to contact the base and seek reinforcements, prompting Wheeljack to recite the Wrecker motto. Though Bulkhead wished for Miko to get away from the team under the dangerous circumstances they found themselves in at the moment, she refused and told him that she wanted to help, causing Ultra Magnus to tell her that she would before stating that her mission was to climb to the top and reach his ship so that the group could contact the other Autobots. After Bulkhead began to mutter in confusion on their next action, Ultra Magnus told him that they would make their stand, here and now. Ultra Magnus participated in fighting the beast, landing the Forge of Solus Prime on the Predacon after it attacked Bulkhead and caused it to hit up against the wall. While it planned to retaliate against him with its tail, Bulkhead grabbed it and kept a grip on the tail before being lunged at Ultra Magnus, colliding into him.
Though the two laid vulnerable, Wheeljack distracted it before launching a bomb that the beast quickly pushed away and soon landed near Bulkhead and Ultra Magnus, causing an explosion that trapped the three under rumble as the Predacon went after Miko. Ultra Magnus and the others got out of the rumble before Wheeljack told him that his bombing did not go as plan. Ultra Magnus told him angrily that it was because any first cycle cadet knew not to use a bomb in a confined space. Ultra Magnus told him that his actions continued to be one step away from getting the three killed and soon gave Bulkhead permission to rescue Miko, who was fighting the Predacon. After Wheeljack asked if he could have permission to provide Bulkhead with back-up, he and Wheeljack joined their ally in locating Miko and their ship, where they watched as she defeated several Vehicons and Starscream.
Ultra Magnus concluded that perhaps he was wrong about her after seeing her skills and came to join her in defeating the Decepticons, causing Starscream and the Vehicons to retreat. After seeing her defeat the Vehicons, Wheeljack told her that she had brought her A-game and that he wanted to remember them just like that before the rust set in, he said staring at Ultra Magnus, who he drove away from along with the others and watched as he went on his own.
Uncovering Shockwave's lab/Hand loss
Ultra Magnus approached Ratchet as he worked, questioning the progress of his Synthetic Energon experiments. After Ratchet told him that he was doing the best he could with the limited technology at his disposal, Ultra Magnus asked him if he realized that an alternative energy source might be essential to their survival. With Ratchet attempting to assure him that no one was more acutely aware of the stakes than him, Ultra Magnus took his word for it and questioned Bulkhead, Smokescreen, Bumblebee and Arcee as to why they were not scouting for Predacon bones. The group explained that they had just come back from the search, which Ultra Magnus suited as an acceptable excuse. As Wheeljack walked back inside, Ultra Magus told him that he did not remember giving him permission to leave the base.
After Wheeljack told him it was because he did not, the former questioned why his hands were smeared with grease before he explained that he was recalibrating his ship's engine and he could expect more from it. Optimus Prime returned, being greeted by the other Autobots. While giving his update on Decepticon activity, he noticed Ultra Magnus standing by himself. Being confronted by Optimus over what had been troubling him, Ultra Magnus related that he feared his command style was having a negative effect on the other Autobots. While Optimus told him that the Autobots on Earth were not the Elite Guard, Ultra Magnus stressed that things had changed since the war for Cybertron. Though Optimus tried to tell him what the Autobots had become, Ratchet interrupted him with the news that their scanner had detected more energon. Ultra Magnus accompanied the Autobots to the energon and found some Vehicons along the way, of which he fought with his teammates and even smashed his hammer directly into one.
Optimus Prime ordered that the stealth team take the energon back while the Wreckers went into the mine. Heading into the cave, Ultra Magnus went with Wheeljack in an opposite direction of Smokescreen and Bulkhead after he told the group to pair off. He and Wheeljack stumbled upon the lair of Shockwave, which housed Predacon clones. He told Wheeljack that Megatron's cloning operation seemed further along then they had anticipated. Noticing Shockwave, the two began to blast their weapons at him as he took for cover. Shockwave ordered an immediate GroundBridge back to base by Soundwave, who obliged him and allowed him to escape. With Shockwave gone, Ultra Magnus noticed that the Predacon tanks had began to lose the liquid inside, seemingly indicating that they would be released soon. Wheeljack asked him if he could apply a grenade and allow it detonate on the beasts. In response, Ultra Magnus allowed him, citing that he could blow them back to the rust age if they were all that stood between humanity and those creatures reaching humans.
With Wheeljack throwing the energon grenade, the two began to flee and transformed into their vehicle modes. Though they successfully detonated the bomb and killed the Predacons there, the escape they planned was a failure, as Predaking had just arrived on the scene and blocked them from escaping with his entry. The latter alluded to having previously fought them and allowed them to live, just as Ultra Magnus realized that he was the Predacon they had fought not very long ago.
Soon after, the explosion from their blast literally caught up with the two, causing Wheeljack to push Ultra Magnus down to take cover. This angered Predaking, who questioned the two as to what they had done to his brethren while they took battle stances before being attacked by him. During the battle, Wheeljack went down after being plunged into a wall. Predaking began to smack him as he laid immobile, which Ultra Magnus stopped by hitting him from the back with the Forge of Solus Prime. The event and action earned him a fight of his own, one which Ultra Magnus carried out by slamming him repeatedly until he finally began to gain some more anger. At this point, the battle resulted in Ultra Magnus being separated from the Forge of Solus Prime as he plugged across the cave and landed on his face as he was struck by his own weapon by Predaking. Ultra Magnus was soon assisted by Wheeljack, who had recovered from his attack and combined their weapons to harm him. Ultra Magnus and Wheeljack batted Predaking around and soon blasted the roof profusely, succeeding in having it come down on him. Soon withdrawing his gun, he was hit by the impact of Predaking's return and the ceiling moving with him. Noticing the defeated Wheeljack, Ultra Magnus tried desperately to reach for the Forge of Solus Prime, but instead had his hand stepped on by Predaking. As Predaking prepared to finish them off, Wheeljack told Ultra Magnus that he was starting to tolerate him and Ultra Magnus told Wheeljack that it had been an honor serving beside him. Predaking came up to him and split the Forge of Solus Prime in two as he told him to prepare to perish.
Optimus Prime arrived, knocking Predaking away as he picked the two up and jetted away. Waking up at the Autobot base, Ultra Magnus noticed Ratchet repairing his hand and gazed at the destroyed part of his body. Ultra Magnus reminded Optimus of when they had spoken earlier and questioned him as to what could be greater than an army, learning that it was the human group called a family.
Omega Lock 2.0
Working with what parts he could scavenge, Ratchet constructed a new, claw-like appendage to replace Ultra Magnus' lost hand. As a result, the commander was briefly detained from active duty, as Ratchet required that he undergo therapy before testing his new hand in combat.
However, upon learning of the Decepticon attack on a research station at the south pole, Ratchet agreed that Magnus could go at Wheeljack's insistence. As Optimus ended up battling Predaking, Ultra Magnus led the rest of the team-with the exception of Ratchet, Smokescreen, and Bulkhead, who had remained back at base while they engaged the Decepticons. When the Predacon showed up Optimus engaged it while Magnus led the rest of the troops against the Decepticons.
Ultra Magnus personally fought Shockwave head on. He punched at Shockwave and Shockwave delivered a few blows as well. Ultra Magnus was able to overpower the decepticon scientist with the claw and brought Shockwave to his knees. Ultra Magnus would've won the day, if it wasn't for the Predacon coming in to dispatch Magnus, Arcee, Bumblebee and Wheeljack. The Predacon escaped with the device and Shockwave in hand.
When the Autobots returned to base, they found out that Ratchet had been taken by Soundwave. Magnus and Bulkhead looked for clues. Ultra Magnus told Smokescreen to cheer up when Smokescreen had shot off a piece from Laserbeak was the only clue they had. When Ratchet transmitted the coordinates of the Nemesis, Ultra Magnus led the troops for the final battle.
Battle on the Nemesis
The Wreckers were ordered to take the bridge of the Nemesis. When they got there Soundwave Ground Bridged them to the brig. They escaped, killed almost every Vehicon and when they returned to the bridge found that Miko and Jack had secured the bridge. Ultra Magnus flew the Nemesis to Cybertron so they could put the Omega Lock to good use. After they used the cybermatter to restore Cybetron, they returned to base where Optimus was giving a speech on how they will miss their human friends/family. Ultra Magnus shared a mutual salute with Agent Fowler, Smokescreen and Wheeljack. He left with the team to go back home while Ratchet remained on Earth with the kids as consultants.
Ultra Magnus was with the team, minus Ratchet, for a ceremony near Kaon. This ceremony promoted Bumblebee, for killing Megatron, from Scout to Warrior. Optimus tells his team that he must retrieve the Allspark in order for life to be restored on Cybertron. Ultra Magnus was assigned to hunt down Starscream and Shockwave and take charge of Cybertron while Optimus searched for the AllSpark. With everyone else assigned to other assignements all he had as backup was Smokescreen. When the two found Predacons, Skylynx horribly beat up Magnus. Smokescreen barely got him to safety using the Phase Shifter. He was kept in the Nemesis sick bay and his injuries were so severe that Ratchet had to return to Cybertron to tend to him. Ultra Magnus was recuperating while the Autobots investigate about the Predacons. When Unicron attacked the Autobots, Bumblebee tells Ratchet that without Optimus being to there, they needed Ultra Magnus' guidance. Ratchet tells Bumblebee that they have witnessed scouts and even field Medics rise to their limits. Magnus and Ratchet were dropped off in Iacon when the Autobots engaged Unicron.
Ultra Magnus was well enough that he could witness Optimus' speech, sacrifice and to witness the sparks flying out of the well.
During the interim, Ultra Magnus apparently had his claw hand replaced with a model resembling the original and either had the Forge of Solus Prime repaired or a replica constructed for his use in battle. He later returned to Earth along with other former members of Team Prime and found Bumblebee leading his own team of Autobots in an effort to recapture escaped convicts from the prison ship Alchemor. Among them were members of the Cybercomrade Sect, a crime syndicate whom Magnus and his teammates joined the Bee Team in tracking. Among the members of the Syndicate was Clipshade, who was in fact a disguised Autobot called upon to infiltrate the syndicate on Ultra Magnus' orders. Ultra Magnus chose to conceal this information from Bumblebee and his team due to not being sure whether Bumblebee's recruits could be trusted, and later released Clipshade after he had been captured in order to continue his mission.
After the two teams discovered that Overhead was the true leader of the Cybercomrade Sect, Bumblebee confronted Ultra Magnus over his close-mouthed approach to their "cooperative effort." Magnus explained his reasoning, but also acknowledged Bumblebee's wisdom in prioritizing keeping humanity safe as Optimus would have wanted, and apologized for not trusting Bumblebee more. The two groups then went after Overhead and her underlings, who were attempting to build a Space Bridge to enable the rest of the Cybercomrade Sect to join them on Earth. Due largely to the efforts of Bee's team, the criminals were apprehended and returned to their Stasis Cells, and Ultra Magnus, Arcee, and Bulkhead departed to return to Cybertron.
Ultra Magnus is a firm, stern, but fair leader. He prefers to follow exact protocol as he even required/expected the Autobots to call him "Sir." Despite being in charge of the Wreckers, he does not approve of their loose cannon lifestyle which brings him into conflict with Wheeljack. Since being on Team Prime, Ultra Magnus is less "by the book" and has adapted more to Team Prime's command style. After battling Predaking, Ultra Magnus and Wheeljack now have respect for each other. Wheeljack would often look out for Magnus and Magnus would do the same in return. Team Prime now respects Ultra Magnus and treats him like a family member.
In Predacons Rising, Ultra Magnus referred Smokescreen as "kid" than Soldier, which indicates that he can be warm-hearted. His traits are passed on by Strongarm. In the Robots in Disguise comics, he notes that he considers Bumblebee to be a friend, something that the younger Autobot admitted was pretty significant for the taciturn commander.
Powers and Abilities
Ultra Magnus is incredibly strong being able knock out Starscream with a single punch and lift the Forge of Solus Prime with ease. He also managed to easily dispatch Shockwave, even with just one hand. Megatron, however is out of Ultra Magnus' range, having been unable to beat him one on one. He is also a skilled pilot being able to fly his ship and the Nemesis. It has been shown that he is a brilliant military tactician as he planned a sly assault on Darkmount, which succeeded in getting rid of Predaking before it attacked. His plan failed as he had underestimated the size of the Decepticon army and the fury with which it would fight.
Though Magnus has been able to beat almost every Decepticon he has come across, he seems to struggle with Predacons as Predaking crushed his hand and Skylynx severely crippled his body and left him in a hospital bed.
He is capable of hand-to-hand combat and is capable of performing various forms of battle tactics.
- Ultra Magnus' design appearance takes influence from both his Generation One and Animated counterparts.
- His colour scheme however appears to retain more blue alongside red as opposed to the character's traditional white.
- Ultra Magnus' introduction was originally hinted in Orion Pax: Part 2, during Orion's research into the Decepticon archive's he discovered the file codenamed 'Optimus Prime' however the image of the character appeared to heavily resemble Ultra Magnus instead.
