Sony is a Japanese-based electronics and media conglomerate. Sony owns the American movie studio, Columbia Pictures since 1989 along with its subsidiaries, TriStar, Screen Gems and Destination Films, which it later formed Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. Sony also created the PlayStation video game console brand, the first Playstation console was introduced on December 3, 1994 in Japan, introduced to North America, Europe and Australia in late 1995. Sony also owns the American anime distribution company, Crunchyroll (formerly known as Funimation), which it operates the American anime streaming service of the same name and the Japanese entertainment company, Aniplex.
In the mid-2000s, Sony secured the North American home video rights to the Generation One cartoon and in late 2006 released the 20th Anniversary Special Edition DVD of The Transformers: The Movie. But since around the 2010's the video rights of every Transformers TV series, including The Transformers: The Movie currently belong to Shout! Studios.
