The name or term Sentinel Prime refers to more than one character or idea. For a list of other meanings, see Sentinel Prime (disambiguation).

Sentinel Prime is a member of the Cybertron Elite Guard under the command of Ultra Magnus. Sentinel has a history of rivalry with Optimus Prime, who attended the Autobot Academy with him. In his academy days, he was somewhat of a maverick, leading the more responsible Optimus to refer to him as a "walking malfunction." Of course, he's the one that ended up on the Elite Guard while Optimus was sent off to repair space bridges, of which fact he's all too fond of reminding his former classmate... despite the fact that it was only because of Optimus who got the position. He also has a bit of a superiority complex toward non-guardsmen Autobots, not to mention that he's intensely organic-phobic.

He usually transforms into a Cybertronic bulldozer, but temporarily adopted the form of a snow plow truck for his stay on Earth. He later returned to his original form after leaving the planet. He possesses an energy lance and an arm-mounted shield which can be expanded into a force-field, as well as tossed about as a weapon. Basically, he'd be a knight in shining armor — if he had a better personality.

However, despite his arrogant exterior, there resides a spark of goodness in him. He really does care for his friends and on extremely rare occasions, does show a small degree of respect for Optimus. But in most cases, Sentinel has a lot of trouble showing his concern for his friends and his begrudging respect for Optimus.

Don't mention his chin. He's a little touchy about it. He is based on the Tick.

"You're gonna need tickets to see EL JERKO GUNONO SHOWO!

Sentinel took Optimus and Elita-1 on a mission to an organic planet looking for an old Decepticon warship, hoping to get all the energon stored within. However, they ran into a pack of massive arachnids. Sentinel tried to hold them off long enough for Optimus and Elita to escape. When he came across a ship that Optimus and Elita had found, Optimus had to drag him away from the exploding energon, forcing them to leave Elita-1 behind. Optimus's radar couldn't find Elita's energy signature, and he assumed that she was dead. A furious Sentinel blamed Optimus for what happened, even though this whole disaster had been his idea. Along Came a Spider

During their trial conducted by Ultra Magnus, facing court martial reguarding the events of what happened to Elita-1, and there breaking the strict rule against going near or landing on planets occupied by organics. Sentinel cowardly blammed the whole thing on Optimus, saying that it was his idea and ran away when Elita-1 was trapped. Saying that he himself would have gone after her but was forced to retreat for fear of being separated from Optimus. When in reality it was the other way around. Because of Sentinel's ridiculous accusations, Optimus was discharged from the Acadamy and forbidden from joining the Elite Guard. While Sentinel got off easy, being allowed to stay in the academy, but was probably demoted. Still liking Optimus, Ultra Magnus pulled a few strings (or wires) and landed Optimus a job as a Maintenance Ship Captain. Endgame, Part 1

TFA Autoboot Camp Bee Sentinel

"Where do you think you are going, Jughead?"

After graduation from the Autobot Academy, he received an official rank Minor, the drill officer for an Autobot training camp. Obviously compensating for being a jerk, he took out his frustrations on recruits like Bumblebee, Bulkhead, Ironhide, Longarm and Wasp. Busting their transistors at every turn, he liked to conduct surprise inspections and force the recruits to chant that they were worthless grease stains. Of course, in Bumblebee's case, the extra attention was not exactly unmerited, as the little glitch-head managed to get Sentinel's feelings on whether Ultra Magnus should retire from command broadcast across the camp. In the end, he commended Bumblebee for his role in discovering a seeming Decepticon spy/traitor. Of course then Bumblebee admitted to accidentally knocking a tower on him (actually covering for Bulkhead) and Sentinel gave him the boot. Autoboot Camp

Years later, he was still a jerk, but a jerk with prestige, having been promoted to Sentinel Prime. When Optimus Prime rang up the Cybertron Elite Guard to tell them of the Decepticons in pursuit, he sneered that a screw-up like Optimus wasn't worth the attention of Ultra Magnus. Piping through a visual of the AllSpark from the cargo hold of their ship shut him up quickly enough. Transform and Roll Out!

After the ship was lost, Sentinel found himself the only one who knew Optimus well enough to give him a eulogy. However, while his words were reasonably civil, his thoughts were not. Later, when Longarm pressed him to continue the search, Sentinel acted like an old man and told him some things are best left buried. The Arrival issue 1

When the snow starts a-falling, There's a jerk you should be calling...

Later, the Elite Guard visited Earth to reclaim the AllSpark. When Jazz decided to take a closer look at the humans, Sentinel warned that organics could spew out slime that melts through armor plating, deliberately goading Optimus Prime with memories of Elita One's fate. He decontaminated Optimus Prime's crew after setting a force field around the ship. When he heard that they'd defeated Megatron and the Decepticons, he didn't believe Optimus, almost causing a fight between him and Bulkhead. Sentinel boasted to Ultra Magnus that he had taken the initiative and scanned some "typical" Earth vehicles so they would not draw undue attention. He had, in fact, scanned massive, destructive vehicles for them both.

Admittedly, if Sentinel Prime had conducted his scan in winter (and there WAS a winter between Optimus contacting the Elite Guard and the Elite Guard actually getting there) a snow plough wouldn't have stood out, and would have appeared very powerful and useful then. So he's not as much a total moron as all that.

The route to Dinobot Island, Sentinel further evidenced how subtlety obviously isn't his strong point by driving through a blockade and off an overpass still under construction. When he, Optimus and Magnus arrived, they encountered the Dinobots, and Sentinel began to attack, believing their technology was primitive. Grimlock's subsequent transformation caught him off guard. They then went back to the city to take care of malfunctioning police drones. Sentinel started to act ignorant , more worried about organic contamination, and vowed to see Optimus arraigned on charges of high treason, but Optimus had finally got enough of Sentinel's mouth and finally told him off, saying to his former friend that Sentinel was on his turf now and he should respect Optimus' decisions. Unsurprisingly, Sentinel was unmoved. Even when shown proof of the All Spark not being destroyed, Sentinel's attitude did not change. He was thus rather surprised when Ultra Magnus said that Optimus had characteristics that Sentinel himself could stand to learn. The Elite Guard

Come one, come all! Join the merriment at the Cybertronian Renaissance Faire!

Not taking the criticism to heart at all, he continued to be a general to Optimus, the local police, humans, and pretty much everyone. His comeuppance would soon come in the form of a humiliating body-jacking by the Headmaster. Putting his reputation (and his noggin) in Optimus Prime's hands, he trusted his comrade to help him get his body back without letting anybody else find out. In this state he was slightly less condescending to Optimus, but it was hard to talk down to someone when reduced to 1/10th his size. He still had choice words about Optimus' practices in the process of saving his body however, such as ripping its arm off and using his head as a soccer ball. Deep down, Optimus was enjoying himself.

After recovering his body, Sentinel had to face the embarrassing prospect of reporting to Ultra Magnus, but surprisingly enough, Optimus covered for him. It took every ounce of effort for the big guy to utter a "thank you" to his comrade later.

While in the Headmaster's possession, Sentinel's body's weapons were upgraded into more powerful forms. At the moment it's not clear whether Sentinel got to keep the upgrades when the Headmaster Unit was separated or not. The Return of the Headmaster

Sentinelprimeanimatedknightmode

He's here to eat giant turkey legs and kick butt... and he's all out of butt.

Unfortunately, the whole Headmaster debacle still failed to purge Sentinel of even a dram of his jerk quotient. When Optimus protested Ultra Magnus's decision to have his crew join the rest of the Autobots off-Earth, Sentinel was quick to jump on Optimus, saying that no sign of Decepticon activity had been detected (failing to consider that the Decepticons had been dampening their signals). He even went so far as to bribe Optimus with an offer of reinstatement in the Elite Guard if he went along with the official story. Through all this, he was more than slightly keen to slap stasis cuffs on Optimus in order to get him to comply with Magnus's orders.

When the Elite Guard's ship detected an AllSpark fragment in a runaway passenger train (actually a trap set by Starscream), Sentinel was irritated to find that he had to stay behind and nursemaid "Maintenance Prime" while Ultra Magnus and Jazz set off to investigate. The situation got worse when, discovering Decepticon presence, Optimus goaded Sentinel into a blind attack and took the opportunity to slap the stasis cuffs on him. Poor sap...{snicker}

Sentinel Prime shocked

"Sanity, you're a madman!"

Sentinel eventually worked his way out of the cuffs and pursued Optimus to where the AllSparked train had stopped, threatening to have him tried and blacklisted for assaulting an Elite Guard, dismissing out of hand Optimus's justification of Decepticon involvement. Fortunately for Optimus, Megatron and Blitzwing chose that moment to blast Starscream to the ground in front of the Autobots.

Sentinel had to take more time than the other Elite Guards to rally; unlike Magnus and Optimus, he had never seen a Decepticon before. Initial dismay aside, Sentinel did manage to last longer than the other Autobots against Starscream's onslaught, but the only reason he didn't fall was that Optimus took the stasis cuffs Sentinel had brought with him (anticipating Optimus's formal arrest as he was) and slapped them onto Starscream. Sentinel still thought Optimus drew out that battle on purpose.

Sentinel vs Optimus, with Jazz in the middle

"You're a jerk!" "No, you!" "No, YOU!" "Ummm... bad guy, that way?"

Afterwards, Magnus expressed admiration over Optimus's willingness to disregard what were clearly ill-informed orders— praise to which Sentinel, predictably, objected. This just earned him another chastisement from Magnus about how sometimes the right thing was to trust one's gut over the book. Shortly afterwords, the Elite Guard departed for Cybertron. Sentinel could probably sigh in relief — no more looking worse than the "washout". Mission Accomplished

While in deep space when Ultra Magnus was making plans to create the first flying autobots using flight protocols from Starscream, the real Starscream managed to escape his stasis cuffs and get out of the Elite Guard's ship, but the flight protocols were already taken. A Fistful of Energon Rise of Safeguard

Things only got worse for Sentinel, as his former student and convicted "traitor" Wasp escaped from prison. Pursuing the former Autobot across an asteroid field, Sentinel had a standoff with Wasp at a space bridge relay point. The escapee activated the space bridge, and blinded by its energies, Sentinel assumed he went through it to parts unknown. In reality, Wasp had mustered what little cunning his shattered mind had left and faked out the Elite Guard member by hiding behind the archway. As usual, Sentinel's deductive skills left something to be desired, so he returned to base. Autoboot Camp

After the Autobots finally created the first flying Autobots Ultra Magnus ordered Sentinel Prime to train them, Sentinel did not want to at first thinking he was decended to Minor again, but Magnus convinced him. Sentinel's new troops pased the training in record time. Afterwards he, Jazz, Jetfire and Jetstorm were assigned by Ultra Magnus to capture the "traitor" Wasp. Rise of Safeguard

He and his crew followed Wasp to Earth, but he received a message from Longarm Prime saying they should have informed him first; another message from Ultra Magnus apologised to Longarm Prime. When he arrived to Earth, he was greeted by Optimus, and gave his standard greeting to the Elite Guard washout. While he continued to pursue Wasp, he ordered his troops Jetfire and Jetstorm after Wasp (and later had to give a bit of an explanation for the aerial Autobots). Upon finding Wasp, he was told by Bulkhead that this was, in fact, Bumblebee and that Wasp was not a traitor, but that the real traitor was Longarm Prime aka Shockwave. After refusing to believe this (and being forced to watch the insane bot threaten Bumblebee and escape) Sentinel returned to his ship. Where Is Thy Sting?

When Sentinel successfully captured Sunstorm, Blitzwing, the paralized Swindle and even Lugnut, Prowl and Jazz both suspected he was getting help and that help turned out to be Lockdown. Lockdown and the original not Liar Starscream double cross Sentinel. Prowl, Jazz and the others are able to stop them, but Lockdown escaped. Sentinel, Optimus and both of their crews were later informed that Ultra Magnus was attacked by Shockwave on Cybertron. Five Servos of Doom

Liar with Sentinel

Who is NOT your daddy jerk? Who is NOT your daddy?

Later, Wasp is tracked down again by the Autobots but in the middle of a feud, Wasp escapes and is captured by Swoop and taken to Blackarachnia. Sentinel Prime receives a warning from Optimus not to proceed to Dinobot Island. Optimus suspected Blackarachnia's involvement and hadn't told Sentinel about the fate of Elita-1 (being turned into a techno-organic). Sentinel ignored the order and ordered Jetfire and Jetstorm to create a diversion to distract the Dinobots who are guarding the door. Sentinel heads into the base where he confronts Blackarachnia and learns her former identity, but is disgusted and attacks her. A Transwarp device overloads and Wasp emerges from the chamber as a large wasp. He transforms into a techno-organic robot mode and announces that he is now WASPINATOR.

Bumblebee and Optimus arrive on the scene. Waspinator attacks Bumblebee, but suffers an energy surge. Optimus and Sentinel bicker over why Optimus didn't forewarn Sentinel over Blackarachnia's identity, but she interrupts them and tries to escape. Blackarachnia tells them that she only created him so she could experiment (with Transwarp energy) on how to change him back without the organic half (which could destroy him), and thus experiment on herself, claiming that going offline would be the "price of science". But Waspinator was listening, and turns on Blackarachnia. She notices that Waspinator's Transwarp signature has becomes unstable, and is chased out of the lab, knocking over Bumblebee in the process. Optimus and Bumblebee carry Sentinel back outside. Jetstorm and Jetfire have finished off the Dinobots questioning whether they were "enough distracted", but see Blackarachnia emerge from the entrance and the enraged Waspinator. As Waspinator attacks Blackarachnia, Optimus intervenes and says that he's not leaving without her again. But Blackarachnia declines, and she forms a cocoon around her and Waspinator as he begins to uncontrollably overload. The Autobots flee, barely escaping the explosion. Most of Dinobot Island is destroyed. The Autobots awake, Optimus claiming that she "sacrificed herself to save them", but Sentinel sorely laments that she used Waspinator to "bug out", and walks away quietly.

Back on the Detroit, Jazz and the Jet twins bid farewell to Optimus and his Autobots. Optimus and Sentinel are left alone, and Optimus apologizes for not telling him about Elita-1, and Sentinel accepts further saying "it's too late for apologies". Optimus claims "for better of worse" that Cybertron needed a leader; Sentinel. The Elite Guard ascend in their ship back to Cybertron. Predacons Rising

When on there way to Cybertron, Sentinel discused with and insulted Alpha Trion, Perceptor and Cliffjumper, jerk. Meanwhile a bolt of energy fron the Nebula the ship was passing revived Swindle, then he freed the other prisoners (Lugnut, Sunstorm, Blitzwing and Liar Starscream) and together they took control of the ship and taken prisoner Sentinel and his crew.

On Earth a space bridge has been built, and when Sentinel asked for help (beacuse he did not want Cybertron to know about this) Optimus went to their aid by Swindle's private transwarp frequency. Optimus freed the prisoners and with a plan with Jazz he managed to recapture Sunstorm, Liar Starscream and Blitzwing while Lugnut and Swindle escaped. Sentinel then gave Optimus a ride back to Earth, Sentinel offered his spot on the Elite Guard to Optimus, but Optimus refused due to his role on Earth. Sentinel then saluted Optimus before he went back to Cybertron.

On Cybertron a huge celebration was held to honor their new leader Sentinel Magnus (until Ultra Magnus recovered), in his speech Sentinel declared he would hunt down Shockwave and everyone cheered for him. Decepticon Air

Sentinelmagnus

Sentinel Magnus?! We're screwed.

He didn't. He could thank yellow jacket and the green doofus for getting Shockwave for him. Nice one, Sentinel.

After becoming temporary Magnus, Sentinel began a propaganda campaign against other possible spy activity like Shockwave and started a strict curfew in certain parts of Cybertron, restricted space bridge travel, and closed any establishments he believed would be a potential decepticon rendezvous. During this period, Ratchet and Captain Fanzone arrived on Cybertron due to an accident with Bulkhead's space bridge. They were found by the Elite Guard with Sentinel accusations of law-breaking, also mentioning some form of quarantine against organic life forms. He, along with the rest of the Elite Guard, soon discovered Omega Supreme floating in the sky above Cybertron. Sentinel and the Elite Guard then detained Ratchet and Fanzone and went straight to the Council. Sentinel suggesting to blast Omega out of the sky with the Cybertronian Defense Cannons. However, Ratchet objected to the suggestion. After defending Omega, Sentinel took offense and set the Elite Guard to arrest him for treason. While he sent Jazz after a fleeing Ratchet, Sentinel and the Jet Twins went to prepare Fortress Maximus for battle against the Council's wishes. Sentinel arrived just at the wrong time during a fight between Ratchet and Shockwave and briefly believed the old bot planned on assassinating Ultra Magnus. Unfortunately, Sentinel's arrival allowed Shockwave to take Arcee and getaway with the Decepticons in Omega Supreme. This Is Why I Hate Machines

Sentinel appeared along with the cheering crowd for Optimus and his team when they returned to Cybertron. Apparently jealous of how Optimus managed to capture Megatron with his "worthless" crew of maintenance workers when he couldn't do it with a crew of trained Elite Guards. Oh yeah and being honored as a hero. Jerk. Endgame, Part II

"The jerk store called, they're running out of him"

  • Sentinel Prime (Deluxe, 2008)
    • Accessories: Energy lance, shield
Sentinel Prime transforms into a monster-truck snowplow, and is armed in robot mode with his trademark shield and lance. These accessories connect together by slipping the lance through the ring in the shield's handle, and can plug onto the vehicle mode to form an odd turret-like thing.
Unfortunately, due to its size, it is largely incompatible with the Headmaster accessory, which only works with Leader-class toys. However, if you don't care about what you're supposed to do, you could just stick it over his head, and keep it from falling off. Besides, the headlights are square while they the are round in the cartoon.

Notes

TFASentinel-OriginalHead

Spoooon!!

  • He's the first "Sentinel Prime" to not die in the opening shots of the Great War. Some would say that's a shame.
  • Sentinel Prime's blue coloration and especially pronounced chin (even by normal Animated standards!) really make him look like the Tick. He's even voiced by Townsend Coleman, who provided the voice of the Tick in his 1990s animated series. At the Cartoon Network panel at BotCon 2008, it was confirmed that Sentinel's design was created after Coleman was cast for the role. It's pretty evident that the writers are running with it, having him utter silly, Tick-esque lines like "Energon-y goodness!" and "Prim-er prime"
  • Yes, you read that right. He did say "Energon-y goodness!" Apparently, Elita-1 thought it was stupid too. Along Came a Spider
  • His disgust of organics is similar to that of Movieverse Megatron. In the 2007 film, Megatron saw a human (portrayed by Michael Bay) and flicked him into a car. 'Sentinel Prime believed organics were diseased and spread the hysteria around Cybertron.
  • Wyatt also related some previously unknown design trivia at BotCon 2008: At the time Transform and Roll Out! went into production, the only part of Sentinel Prime that had been fully designed was his head. However, this turned out to be a non-final design; in his subsequent appearances, Sentinel's head is shorter and squatter, with a more bulbous chin and dark grey instead of white. Also, in "Transform and Roll Out", he has a set of extra smoke stacks/antennae on his shoulders, which would vanish during his first full-body appearance.
  • Sentinel Prime's shield-tossing fighting style is a fairly direct reference to Captain America. Far more coincidentally, one of Captain America's many sobriquets is the "Sentinel of Liberty".
  • In "The Elite Guard", it is revealed that the "Prime" in his and Optimus's name is a designation of rank, so despite Optimus being an academy washout, he's still Sentinel's equal. This no doubt irritates Sentinel quite a bit.
  • Though characters named "Sentinel Prime" have been used or shown in two comics continuities and mentioned on the back of toy packaging, this is the first time a character named "Sentinel Prime" has been used in a cartoon and been produced as a toy.
  • His battle mask is odd enough because it slightly resembles Ultra Magnus' torso.
  • It turns out Sentinel is also a jerk towards Blackarachnia, more so than he has ever been to Optimus or virtually anyone else. Seriously, he considers Elita-1 to be dead and gone. But considering his attitude towards her, he may be more of the monster (and he asks why Optimus didn't tell him...).
  • In the episode "This is Why I Hate Machines", Sentinel is seen using his Earth Altmode. According to the Allspark Almanac, he switched back when he heard that Ultra Magnus was keeping his earth mode.
  • His torso resembles a skull in some way.
  • He only showed signs of respect ONCE: In "Decepticon Air", after the Decepticons are re-captured and frozen, Sentinel offers Optimus a place on the Elite Guard following his full promotion as Magnus.
