Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a 2009 British-American science fiction action film directed by Michael Bay and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. It is a sequel to the 2007 film Transformers and the second installment in the live-action Transformers film series taking place two years after its predecessor. The plot revolves around Sam Witwicky, who is caught in the war between two factions of alien robots, the Autobots, led by Optimus Prime and the Decepticons, led by Megatron. Sam is having strange visions of Cybertronian symbols, and being hunted by the Decepticons under the orders of an ancient Decepticon named The Fallen, who seeks to get revenge on Earth by finding and activating a machine that would provide the Decepticons with an energon source, destroying the sun and all life on Earth in the process. Returning Transformers include Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ironhide, Ratchet, Megatron, Starscream, Bonecrusher and Scorponok.

With deadlines jeopardized by possible strikes by the Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild, Bay managed to finish the production on time with the help of previsualization and a scriptment by his writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and series newcomer Ehren Kruger. Shooting took place from May to November 2008, with locations in Egypt, Jordan, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and California, as well as air bases in New Mexico and Arizona.

Revenge of the Fallen was released on June 19, 2009 in the United Kingdom and on June 24, 2009 in the United States. The film grossed a total of $402.1 million in the U.S. and Canada and $434.2 million in other territories, for a total of $836.3 million worldwide. It was the second highest-grossing film of 2009 in the US and Cananda, 23rd domestically, the 44th highest-grossing film of all time and fourth highest of the year worldwide. With over 11 million home media sales in 2009, it was also the top-selling film of the year in the United States.

Metacritic said the film received "generally unfavorable reviews";[3] the Rotten Tomatoes consensus says it is "a noisy, underplotted, and overlong special effects extravaganza that lacks a human touch".[4] The film won three Golden Raspberry Awards at the 30th Golden Raspberry Awards ceremony and became the highest-grossing film to win the Worst Picture award. The film surpassed its predecessor at the box office, grossing a total of $402.1 million in the US and Canada and $434.2 million in other territories, for a total of $836.3 million worldwide. It was the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2009, 32nd domestically and fourth-highest of the year worldwide. With over 11 million home media sales in 2009, it was also the top-selling film of the year in the United States. It was followed by Dark of the Moon in 2011, Age of Extinction in 2014, and The Last Knight in 2017.

"Earth, birth place of the human Race. A species much like our own, capable of great compassion, and great violence. For in our quest to protect the humans, a deeper revelation dawns: Our worlds have met before..."
―Optimus's intro commentary.

C'mon Decepticon punk!

In the distant past, before 17,000 B.C., (even before Optimus Prime and the other Transformers arrived on Earth), a dynasty of Cybertronians called the Seven Primes harvested stars. They needed the power for Energon to power Cybertron’s AllSpark. The Primes agreed, if any life-bearing worlds relied on a star, then they would not drain it. They used a device called the "Solar Harvester" to drain the energy from stars. In 17,000 BCE one Prime built a Solar Harvester on Earth to drain the Sun. The others named him "The Fallen" due to his harmful plan, and prevented its implementation, by hiding the Matrix of Leadership, which can activate the Solar Harvester.

Now, Optimus and some Humans lead NEST. It is a military organization consisting of human troops and some Autobots. The newcomers are Arcee, Jolt, the twins Mudflap and Skids, with Sideswipe.

While on a mission in Shanghai, to destroy Decepticons, the team finds the Decepticons: Demolishor and Sideways. Most of the Autobots and NEST troops pursue Demolisher. Arcee, Chromia, Elita 1 and the twins chase Sideways. Sideswipe arrives and wrecks Sideways, by slicing him apart. Optimus comes to Shanghai near the path of a rampaging Demolisher. Both Optimus and Ironhide cause the large Decepticon to crash, damaging him severely. Before Prime finishes him, however, Demolisher gives them a cryptic message stating that "the Fallen shall rise again".

Back in the United States, Sam Witwicky and his parents are packing for his trip to college. Sam answers the phone call from his girlfriend, Mikaela Banes. As they talk, Sam finds a shard of the Allspark in his D-Day jacket. He looks into it and receives several alien symbols flashing in his mind. Sam drops the shard and it burns through the floor into the kitchen. The shard brings all the appliances to life. The appliances attack Sam and knock him down. They wreck the house and things in the back yard. Sam calls Bumblebee who comes out from the garage and destroys all the drones. After saying goodbye to Bumblebee, who cries, Sam gives the Allspark shard to Mikeala, who arrives at the house. She does not realize that she is being spied on by the little Decepticon Wheelie, who detects the shard in her posession.

At NEST headquaters, the team is debriefing when Theodore Galloway, the National Security Adviser, arrives, sent to relay the President's concerns over the amount of casualties in Shanghai. Galloway reasons that the only logical objective that the Decepticons have on Earth is to hunt the Autobots. He perceives the "Fallen rising again" message as no real threat and suggests that the Autobots leave Earth. Optimus agrees if that is what the President wishes, but also warns that Galloway might be wrong. While they talk, Soundwave hacks into a military satellite and eavesdrops on their conversation. Hearing Galloway revealing the location of a dead Megatron in the Laurentian Abyss. He also learns where a piece of the Allspark is being held by NEST soldiers.

Upon the Witwicky's arrival at Sam's new college, Sam meets his new roomate Leo Spitz, who runs a conspiracy websites that focuses on the Transformers existance and the government's hiding of them. Sam's parents come in a greet him while Sam's mother becomes drugged after unwittingly eating marijuana-laced brownies. In the corridor, Leo points out Alice, another student he has the hots for. But Sam is more concerned about getting his mother under control.

Soundwave launched Ravage down to the Diego Garcia NEST base. Ravage realeases a swarm of Microcons down a ventilation into the room where the Allspark shard is being held. The Microcons form Reedman, who steals the shard and escapes with Ravage.

Back at Sam's college, Sam is dragged into a party on campus where he once again sees ramdom alien symbols flashing in his mind and writes them down on a tabel with cake icing. Alice sees him doing it and tries to seduce him when Bumblebee arrives. Alice takes a ride with Sam in Bumblebee, who tries to get her to leave. She finally does back off when Bumblebee sprays lubricant on her. Bumblebee takes Sam to Optimus who askes him to apeal to the U.S. government for the Autobots but Sam refuses. Sam then leave on a note that it isn't his war, but Optimus fears that it soon will be.

In the Laurentian Abyss, Scalpel, Ravage, and the Constructicons use the Allspark shard and some spare parts from Scrapmetal to revive Megatron. Megatron flies to one of Saturn's moons where the Nemesis is located. There, he reunites with Starscream and his master, The Fallen. The Fallen instructs Megatron and Starscream to capture Sam in order to discover the location of the Matrix of Leadership as well as to destroy Optimus, the only possible hindrance to his plans.

Maybe the Own thing had limits.

At the college, Sam is kicked out of his astronomy class when he has another flashing of alien symbols and starts writing them uncontrollably. He realizes that the effects that he is experiencing all began with the Allspark shard. He calls Mikeala and tell he not to touch it. As they talk, Wheelie tries to steal the shard from the safe that Mikeala has it locked in but she catches him. Mikeala then boards a plane to go see Sam and brings Wheelie with her. Mikaela arrives in town just as Alice, who is revealed as a Pretender, attacks Sam, who was forced to lie down. Mikaela, Sam, and his roommate Leo destroy Alice, but are captured by Grindor. The Decepticon Scalpel (known as "The Doctor") prepares to remove Sam's brain after Megatron pins him down, but Optimus crashes through the ceiling while Bumblebee bursts through the wall. A short fire fight ensues as Bumblebee fends off Starscream, allowing the humans to escape, while Optimus lands, pulling out his second gun, preparing to take on Megatron. Optimus takes on both Starscream and Megatron in a barrage of shots and as Starscream is sent reeling from a few close shots, Optimus fires a single round, which sends Megatron through a wall. Optimus collects Sam while Megatron flees and they head towards a forest as Bumblebee evacuates the rest of the humans. Megatron quickly catches up, engaging Optimus in close-quarters combat. Grindor and Starscream arrive, and a brutal fight ensues. Optimus proves his incredible battle powers by fighting Megatron himself to a standstill, defeating Starscream and eventaully killing Grindor by ripping his head apart. Unfortunately, while distracted with Sam's wellbeing, Optimus is killed by Megatron, who viciously stabs and shoots him while his back is turned.

I can't even rely on you to swat a simple insect!

After Optimus Prime's death, Megatron orders a full-scale assault on the planet. The Fallen speaks to the world by transmitting a television transmission from a satellite hacked by Soundwave and demands that they surrender Sam to the Decepticons or the attack will continue. Sam, Mikaela, Leo, Bumblebee, the Twins and Wheelie regroup, with Leo believing that his online rival "RoboWarrior" may be of assistance. "RoboWarrior" is revealed former Sector Seven agent Seymour Simmons, who informs the group that the Transformers have visited Earth before, as their language is written on ruins all over the world. Wheelie identifies the language as that of the Primes, and directs the group to a former Decepticon named Jetfire, who can translate the language. They find and reactivate Jetfire at the Smithsonian. After Jetfire goes on a rampage through the aircraft museum, Sam tells him about the symbols he keeps seeing in his head. Jetfire understands them and teleports the group to Egypt where Sam's hand is injured during the ejection. Jetfire explains the history of The Fallen and that the tomb of the Primes is located in the surrounding desert, and only a Prime can kill The Fallen. Jetfire provides them with a vital ancient clue: "When the dawn a-lights the Dagger’s Tip, the three kings will reveal the doorway.” The group locate the Pyramids of Jordan, referred to as the Dagger's Tip, and spend the night until dawn. When the sun rises, Sam recognizes three outstanding stars near the horizon, having gone through the entire astronomy textbook earlier, as being called the Three Kings. They follow the stars and locate the tomb of the Primes, where a brawl between Skids and Mudflap breaks a wall and reveals the entrance to the tomb. The Matrix is located inside, but crumbles to dust in Sam's hands.

Rotf-skids&mudflap-film-egypt

I SEE LORD PRIMUS!

Believing that the Matrix can still revive Optimus, Sam collects the dust in his sock and instructs Simmons to telephone Major William Lennox to bring the other Autobots and Optimus' body to their location. The military arrives with the Autobots, but so do the Decepticons, and a battle arises. During the fight, the mighty Decepticon Devastator is formed and starts to use his Vortex Grinder to unearth the Solar Harvester, concealed within one of Egypt's pyramids, before being destroyed by the US military's prototype rail gun, guided by Simmons. Jetfire arrives in time to save the group from Mixmaster by slicing him in half and smashing his head off, but is mortally wounded by a surprise attack from Scorponok whom he kills. The Air Force carpet-bombs the Decepticons, but Megatron breaks through the offensive and attacks Sam, appearrently killing him. In a vision, Sam meets with the other Primes, who have been watching him for a long, long time. The Primes tell him that the Matrix of Leadership cannot be not found, but must be earned. He awakens and the dust reassembles to form the Matrix, which Sam uses to revive Optimus, by merging the Matrix with his spark.

However, The Fallen jumps into the fray and steals the Matrix shortly thereafter, rendering Optimus unable to fight once again. The Fallen activates the Solar Harvester. In a final effort, Jetfire sacrifices his parts and spark to Optimus, giving Optimus the power he needs to defeat The Fallen. With his new, enhanced capabilities, Optimus destroys the Solar Harvester by shooting it down and takes on both Megatron and The Fallen. After severely damaging Megatron, Optimus faces off against The Fallen and kills him by tearing away part of his faceplate then forcing his fist through his torso and crushing The Fallen's spark with his bare hands. Megatron and Starscream retreat and Megatron vows that their fight is not finished.

Optimus Prime concludes the event by proclaiming that the Transformers and humans now share an untold history and will combine despite their differences.

"Our races, united by a history long forgotten. And a future we shall face together. I, am Optimus Prime, and I send this message, so that our pasts will always be remembered. For in those memories, we live on..."
―Optimus' closing narration.

Rating[]

This film has been rated PG-13 in the United States for intense sequences of sci-fi action violence, language, some crude and sexual material, and brief drug content. In the United Kingdom, the film was rated 12A for the same reasons.

Errors[]

Argh.

  • When Bumblebee, Skids and Mudflap are on the Benjamin Franklin Bridge coming into Philadelphia, (if you look you can see I-676 heading to Camden, NJ in a sign above on the opposite direction) from where the group is heading. They are nowhere near NYC at all. Moreover, they were shown going into NYC prior.
  • At Simmons Deli, which is to be in NYC, is actually Philadelphia, reason being: The Elevated Train above coming into the scene is SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority), if you look closely and go frame by frame you can see the SEPTA Logo on the Side of the train. SEPTA as I know doesn’t travel into NYC. Ooops!
  • In the Frat House Party where Sam gets images from the symbols and uses the icing from the cake to write them on the table, Alice approaches him and asks him if he's okay. Sam says he is getting a napkin for his drink. He then gets a drink of punch from the bar. Initially, the drink is full, when Alice says she wants to dance, the drink is almost empty. When Sam states he's in a semi-relationship the glass is full again. We don't see Sam set the glass down before Alice slams him into the bar while in the chair before the big dude screams about who drove the freaking yellow Camaro parked in the lawn.
  • We see Alice in front of Leo and walking near the rear of the Camero in the first scene, then she is walking behind Leo then magically appears in the passenger window from another camera view, but the audiences didn't see her approach in the back window side window of the Camero.
  • At the beginning of the film, some primitive humans were hunting a Bengal Tiger, in Egypt, which is on the African continent. Bengal Tigers live 3,000 miles away from Egypt, primarily in India and Bangladesh, which are in Asia. Errors like this have happened before.
  • When the Fallen begins attacking the primitive humans at the beginning of the film, starting by crushing one with his foot, in one scene he has his right leg lifted up, but in the next scene, he's crushed a human with his left leg.
  • When Skids and Mudflap transform, (in their Ice cream truck form) there are popsicles falling out of Mudflap's half, but they mysteriously disappear in the next scene.
  • When Megatron transforms and lands on the radio tower, he clearly lands facing the tower. Yet in the next scene, he's seen with his back to the tower. A close observation and slower frame shows the answer: basically, it's a complete graphical cheat.
  • In the flyover shot of the barge on which the four Constructicons sit, a red bulldozer, a concrete mixer, a green dump truck and a yellow front-end loader are visible. After the flyover shot, the yellow loader disappears and is replaced with a yellow Volvo excavator, and the red bulldozer has changed to a yellow bulldozer.
  • Grindor's vehicle mode is a CH-53E Super Stallion, but when he arrives in the forest to assist Megatron the Radar Pave Low bulb that is seen on Blackout in the 2007 film is featured on Grindor.
  • When Grindor is carrying Sam, Mikaela and Leo, he doesn't seem to care that Sam is hanging on to the car and could fall. Megatron needs Sam so he can extract the information he needs.
  • In the scene where Optimus rips off Grindor's face, his helicopter engines are missing, and when Optimus pulls him to the ground, they return on his shoulders.
  • The BACK of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum (actually the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, an annex of the Smithsonian in Virginia) is a desert?!
    • The exterior is actually the Davis-Monthan Airforce Base's graveyard, located in Tucson, but is explicitly called the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in the film, making this a bit of an error since the back of the real Smithsonian is downtown DC.
  • According to the subtitle, the Air Force Base Optimus is taken to after his death is in New Jersey. This is not possible. The base is in a desert, and there are no deserts in New Jersey. Also, the C-17's read Altus, a base that is NOT in New Jersey.
  • After the first fight with Optimus Prime, a bird's-eye view of New York City is shown. However, a scene later, Megatron and Starscream are seen on top of a Los Angeles building.
  • In some scenes, the Transformers were seen to have 'battle damaged' parts, but when they transform, the broken parts returned to normal, such as Optimus Prime, who had the glass on his chest smashed.
    • This is because, as stated in the first film, the Transformers have a "self-regenerating molecular armor." Also, Bay said in an interview that they are made out of microscopic nano bots that function like cells on a human body and heal damage.
  • During the Air Force bombarding of the Decepticons in Egypt, Ironhide, barely in one piece, gets clear of the explosion but loses his left cannon. Later, right after the Fallen steals the Matrix from Optimus, that same cannon is shown on Ironhide's left arm again.
  • Leo claims he accidentally tased himself in the nuts, but if you look closely, when Leo tripped over the guard's foot and the taser touched him, it was around his abdominal area.
  • When Wheelie scans the United States map to show the locations of the Seekers, Simmons says that the closest one is in Washington DC; However, DC is not even scanned. The closest location is actually more like Trenton, New Jersey.
  • When Optimus gives up Jetfire's parts, he also gives up huge rifle on his right arm, but when his fighting The Fallen, that rifle isn't there. He only uses it to destroy the Solar Harvester and shoot The Fallen once. And that smaller gun which first was attached to his left arm, appears on his right arm before cutting into The Fallen’s face.
  • Optimus Prime is revived during the afternoon, but in the next scene when the Fallen looks towards the sun, it's midday.
  • So, apparently Michael Bay thinks marijuana makes you act like a crazy person. Clearly he's never seen someone get high, because marijuana mellows the user out.
    • Perhaps it is an very unusual form of "pot paranoia", the "down" which follows the initial "high". Or, it must be considered that kids are parts of the audiences, so showing the real effects of marijuana would not be that "funny". Though perhaps educationally preventative.
  • When the Constructicons begin to transform and merge into Devastator, Scrapper lifts his scoop but in the next shot it's still on the ground.
    • When the turn is for Long Haul the camera goes up, a side mirror magically appears in the right side.
    • In the same shot, it can be seen that the Constructicons are in different positions, as an example, Mixmaster appears in front of Scrapper but in the next shot he is in front of Scavenger.
    • When Mixmaster attaches to Scavenger, Devastator's mouth appears and roars, but he roars again with a different voice a few shots ahead.
  • For some reason, the opening shot of the Solar Harvester shows it residing in a rocky gorge in the mountains, yet, when the final battle is taking place in Egypt, the terrain is smooth and flat.
  • Only a Prime can defeat the Fallen. So why didn't the Six Primes all gang up and wipe him out?
    • It is possible that the Fallen is far more powerful than any other Primes that the only way to defeat him is a descendant of another Prime, specifically, Optimus Prime.
  • The first interaction between Cybertronians and Humans was 13,000 BC, yet, they keep sayin' it was "a millennia ago" which would mean, 1,000 years.
  • Sam has a two story fall in the library when Alice attacks but survives it. Hmm...

Continuity errors[]

Argh.

  • It's clearly established in the first film that Cybertronians had nothing to do with humans. The sequel directly demolishes this by claiming that Cybertronians have been here before.
    • It is possible this was a fact unknown to the Transformers present in the first movie, however, this is a contradiction left unanswered on screen.
  • Bumblebee picks up Sam at the party in the evening (as evidenced by time pieces) and arrives at the cemetery in the daytime. Is the travel distance and/or time between the two places so great as to show such a marked change?
  • If Transformers are radioactive, wouldn't Sam have debilitating brain damage after all that time riding around inside Bumblebee?
    • Low levels of radiation would not be harmful, even in the long run. The average human is exposed to about 360mrems each year, such as X-Rays.
    • However, the radiation may have been a form that is harmless to humans. Also, humans themselves release radiation in the form of heat, so it is proven that not all forms of radiation are dangerous.
  • When Megatron is revived, five Decepticons go down to revive him, one is torn up for parts to repair him, and somehow six still come up out of the water. If one was torn up, it would have still been five total leaving the water. It seems we have a second, unspecified resurrection.[sarcasm]
    • Note: Scalpel doesn't count because is too small to be detected by sonar.
      • This is further compounded when the four Decepticons are first seen from a bird's eye view as Ravage arrives, then when the view changes so to do the positions of the Decepticons with a crane Decepticon magically appearing and then vanishing in the next shot when the four originally seen Decepticons enter the water.
  • Some fans speculate that Bonecrusher survived from the previous film which is highly disputable.
  • Why would the U.S. military allow any craft to sail so close to Laurentian Abyss, which is patrolled by the US military and not allowed anyone get closed?
  • When Bumblebee fights Skipjack in Egypt, he gets his face mask ripped in half by Ravage, yet in the next shot, it shows him wearing his complete face mask.
    • It's possible that his mask just got pulled back a bit, like in Transformers right after he and Mikaela killed Brawl.
  • USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) is sunk by the crashing of the Decepticon Protoforms. She displays the identification number "74" instead of the proper "71". To add confusion, USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) shows up later in the film displaying the number "71"! It is possible that adjustments to the images of the numerals on these ships were to be made using CGI, but were forgotten.
  • It's never clear why Alice is after Sam, being at his college before he arrived there, and before she finds him drawing Cybertronian symbols. She may be after the AllSpark fragment, or she could just be trying to kill him in revenge of Megatron. No explanation is explicitly stated or even implied. Um, well... in fact, why she's even there is unexplained, leaving it entirely open to the vividness of the viewers imagination.
  • Though Sam's hand is injured after Jetfire transported them to Egypt, his hand is professionally bandaged, which can be only done by a doctor or someone with a high degree of medical knowledge. One might wonder about the origin of the material, but the origin of the Doctor seems a bit more curious.
    • Though Sam's injury is a concession due to Shia LaBeouf's real-life injury of his hand, it still leaves a continuity question.
  • When Jetfire is told he is on "Earth", he reacts like he has never heard of the planet at all, though this may be due to linguistic naming conventions having changed over time. However, he is able to teleport the humans very close to the "unknown" location of the Tomb of the Primes and describe the epic battle that took place without any further explanation to clarify this point to him.
  • Megatron tells Starscream that the Decepticons aren't going to "hide" from the humans anymore. But when did Megatron ever hide? He came back to life, immediately starting fighting Autobots in broad daylight in a major city, died, came back to life, and immediately started fighting Autobots in broad daylight again. Sure, someone may have told him off-screen that the Decepticons had been in hiding before finding him inside the Hoover Dam and again during his two-year underwater entombment, but it's an awkward line given Megatron's past actions. In addition to that, both of these thirty-foot-tall intelligent metallic aliens are having this casual chat about revealing themselves to the humans whilst standing atop a building in the middle of a DENSELY POPULATED CITY. That renders the entire "Robots in Disguise" concept a little moot.
  • When Sam holds up the pictures of the older Transformers to Wheelie, the two pictures switch between shots.
  • After takeoff, the Predator magically loses its propeller engine and somehow gets a rocket engine. This is due to the scene being stock footage from the first movie, but remains an in-continuity error. In fact, there's a lot of reused footage from the first movie.[citation needed]
    • In fact, the drone shown taking off is an MQ-9 Reaper Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV), while the reused footage is of an MQ-1 Predator Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) used for surveillance and reconnaissance. Only the Reaper drone has a prop engine, whereas the Predator is jet-powered.
  • Leo was tasered by Simmons when he started whining in the desert scene, and yet he steps out of Bumblebee minutes later as though nothing happened.
    • The effects of some tasers only last a couple minutes.
      • Wasn't he tasered in the gnads?
  • Somehow, Devastator's vortex generator was powerful enough to suck up a people carrier (which would easily weigh more than a ton or a few) and NOT two humans. Also, as Devastator starts his vortex, Leo desperately clings onto a pole for dear life. Yet, a short time later, he and Simmons are now running away from Devastator, even though the sound effect of the vortex clearly indicates that the vortex was running stronger than before.
    • Also worth noting: Simmons cleverly figures out that they're safe under Devastator and suggests running there.... when Devastator could very easily restarted his vortex and welcomed all of them if it were not for Mudflap who unexpectedly burst out of his face.
  • Sam somehow suddenly knows the Fallen's name. The twins and Wheelie couldn't possibly have told him the name for obvious reasons: only the very old ones have even heard of the name. Again, an easily cleared up mystery considering the voices in his head, or perhaps the surprisingly expansive knowledge of Wheelie, which even so was left completely unresolved in the movie.
    • Mikaela could've told him at some point. Wheelie mentioned something about the Fallen demanding him find the Allspark shard so she might've mentioned to him that there was someone else with that name looking for it.
  • When they reach the main exhibit in the museum, Simmons claimed they incapacitated five guards; they only took out two. Maybe Simmons incapacitated the other three off screen, but who knows.
  • Jetfire's presence and physical status leave many questions. How long has he been inactive? What was his status during the Civil War? What was he doing in an inactive status on Earth at that time? And why was he using the form of a sadly defunct vehicle at the time? Was he unable to take a new form, unaware of the need, or just too tired to care? We are left with more mysteries than a Sherlock Holmes anthology.
  • This is the first movie in the series so far to actually mention energon. Simmons and Sam both seem to know what energon is all of the sudden, and talk about it as though they've known all along, despite the fact that nobody mentioned it in the previous film.

Not actually an error[]

Argh.

  • If N.E.S.T team can weed out and pinpoint Decepticons from all over the world, how did they not find the four Constructicons who sat directly above Megatron's remains? With several possible answers, none is so much as implied.
  • Sam's paranoid roommate makes a reference to a Transformer battle in Los Angeles, but the battle in the first movie took place in fictitious Mission City. It's possible that a battle took place in Los Angeles some time between the two movies, but it's not clear. However, this is still possible considering that Lennox said that NEST has been working for two years.
    • Also, if you type "Mission City" in Google Earth, it will take you to downtown Los Angeles, but it was stated that it is 22 miles north of Hoover Dam, however Tranquility, Sam's hometown, could be a neighborhood in Los Angeles, and he could have seen Bumblebee and Barricade's brawl and the other Autobots coming to Earth.
    • If you watch the movie, go to the scene where Brawl/Devastator is firing at the humans, you should be able to see a red sign hanging on the side of the building to the left of Brawl/Devastator that says: Los Angeles or something like that
  • When Grindor arrives in the forest to aid his commander Megatron, the helicopter looks totally computerized as the MH-53 Pave Low Helicopter but is actually the CH-53E Super Stallion.
  • When Grindor is carrying Sam, Mikaela and Leo, he doesn't seem to care that Sam is hanging on to the car and could fall. Grindor could just transform into his humanoid mode and grab Sam rather than make sure in addition both Mikaela and Leo survive before being brought to the warehouse. Megatron needs Sam so he can extract the information he needs.
  • There are a few repeated shots of characters and scenes, such as Soundwave in space, Bumblebee shooting at the tiny appliance robots, and a heavily damaged Optimus looking up, along with a shot of the Predator plane from the previous film, as well as other Transformers entering the Earth's atmosphere.
  • After the events of the first movie, there was at least one known fragment of the All Spark left, which was later stolen and used to revive Megatron, which makes people wonder, why didn't the Autobots use it to revive Jazz?
  • In the scene where the Autobots (in alternate modes) are chilling in the hangar, Jolt is missing among them. He shows up later in one of the two shots of the Autobots dispersing into teams, and again when Optimus' body is dropped off at the NEST headquarters. Perhaps a late arrival?
  • Jetfire complains about his age and robustness, but says to Optimus: "Take my (rusty old broken down) parts, and you will have a power you've never known." Perhaps the 'power you've never known' was the power to fly? Although by logic, he was still strong before Scorponok almost killed him and that he is internally aching.
  • How did Megatron know WHICH boy absorbed the knowledge of AllSpark? The Fallen only told him that it was absorbed by "the human child." child. Then again, only Sam and Mikaela would be in any sort of position to absorb the AllSpark. Megatron knows right away who The Fallen is talking about, or can make a pretty good guess. Megatron clearly doesn't consider Mikaela a possibility, but considering that he never really crossed paths with her in the first film, it makes sense that he wouldn't think of her. Megatron is not a chauvinist, we promise. While his mind may well leap to the only human child he has interacted with[sexualy], it is still a bit of a stretch to automatically assume and base your future actions on an assumption.
  • The Decepticons foolishly use the Witwickys to bring Sam close to Rampage rather than actively ransoming them.
  • Alice's mass does not crush Sam when she is on top of him, even though every part of her besides the organic shell is made of metal. Some viewers had a problem with this, though unknown chemistry or support may play a role.
  • Sam is so smart that when he has "a few miles to go", he decides to run them on foot and have his car follow him, rather than drive to the meet-up point and get there before most of the Decepticons.
  • When Sam's identity was practically given out to everyone (probably those who were watching their TVs) on Earth, his magical hoodie gave him instant immunity from millions of possible death mobs and the ability to freely walk the streets to greet his secret agent-turned-chef friend. In fact, not a single person even seems to bother about Sam: no uproars, no mobs, nothing, to capture Sam. And after the massive, impossible to cover up endfight, it appears that no one decides to ask Sam why his face appeared on every connected screen in the world. Apparently his entire college campus live in some kind of disconnected bubble-dimension.
  • Apparently everyone in Shanghai is also blind and deaf since no one noticed that it was a giant robot that caused the destruction instead of a a gas explosion.
  • Oddly, when The Fallen makes his broadcast, no one really seems to care in a sort of pee-your-pants, evil alien invasion way. The humans just watch it like a bad movie. Or maybe they just shrugged it off and took it as a bad joke or exhibited blind human nature.
  • Simmons keeps his collection of top secret files, pictures from Sector Seven, and Frenzy's head in a room with at least two OPEN, eight foot high windows on a ground floor? We can see his security training has served him well.
  • Even though the Constructicons merged into Devastator, we can see Long Haul, Mixmaster and Scrapper among the fighting Decepticons in the climax battle. This can be explained by the fact that there are possibly multiple copies of each Constructicon, which might also explain both Demolishor and Scavenger both having the Terex excavator Altmode.
  • We know that in the first film, the only human-made weapon that can damage Transformers is the Sabot round, and yet during the Egypt battle, Lennox and his men are clearly seen rushing into battle armed with conventional weapons. What's even stranger is how these weapons seemed to be actually effective against the Decepticons (several Protoforms seemed to have been killed by normal machine gun fire whilst others were clearly damaged by said weapons). Maybe advances were made in human technology during the two-year gap between the two films? But we know that even if this is possible, the Autobots had nothing to do with it as Optimus clearly stated that sharing their knowledge on advanced weaponry would end badly with the humans.
    • During multiple battles throughout the movie, the NEST members are using a modified version of either the M-16 Assault rifle or the M-4 Carbine, with drastic modifications made to the barrel, which, presumably, could enable them to fire the 40mm Sabot rounds that were so effective in the first film. No dialogue or real evidence backs this theory up, but the fact that their guns were modified and that NEST served as a specialized Decepticon-hunting team would support this. Also, not all weapons were ineffective in the first film; missiles launched from F-22 Raptor Jet Fighters were clearly able to damage both Megatron and Blackout, therefore, it's not much of a stretch to assume that concentrated tank fire, carpet bombing, and 50 caliber machine gun fire could do some damage in the battles.
  • As with the first film (and all other media, in fact), the Transformers go through all the trouble of disguising themselves as normal vehicles, but still keep their insignias on obvious parts (e.g. as part of their paint job or hood ornaments)? Now that the human governments are aware of their presence, who's going to fall for it except the public?
    • The Transformers do need speed, and turning into vehicle mode is the advantage over running on their hind legs.
  • A Decepticon resembling Grindor except with the helicopter mode traces being absent had kidnapped Sam's parents, yet it turns out Skipjack was the one who trapped them inside his vehicle mode. Were Sam's parents handed over to Skipjack instead?
  • There are several problems regarding The Fallen. When Optimus Prime is killed by Megatron, The Fallen senses it from Nemesis, pulling himself free from his throne and says, "The last Prime is dead." There's appears to be a direct connection between the Primes and whatever force has kept The Fallen in his throne, but if so who put him there? The six other Primes sacrificed themselves to protect the Matrix of Leadership, and it's implied that there were only seven Primes in the film, and he asserts that "only a Prime" can defeat him... so who was powerful enough to imprison The Fallen?
    • The possibility that The Fallen was trapped does explain why he doesn't appear in the first film.
  • Jetfire says that Optimus Prime must be "a great descendant" of the Primes. This throws into question the idea of "descendants" and how Transformer reproduction works in the live-action film universe. Also, if The Fallen and his brother were Primes, and if Optimus and Megatron are literally brothers instead of a turn of phrase(per the end of the first film), wouldn't that already make Megatron a Prime? Or can Transformers be adopted? It's a very fuzzy concept.
  • And if Megatron was a Prime, wouldn't he have to die again so The Fallen could be free?
    • Did you not notice that he was working "with/for" The Fallen so if Megatron became a Prime it wouldn't matter because he is working for him, unless your suggesting the possible rebellion that happens in DOTM.
  • It is left explicitly unclear why the Primes killed themselves to hide the Matrix. Some form of self preservation as in their later ghost images? To cover an energy signature? No answer is given.
  • The Seven Primes' main rule was "to never destroy a planet with life". This doesn't make direct sense because they destroy the sun, not the planet, though destruction of the planet is effectively inevitable. In the Movie Adaptation comics, the rule is "never destroy a star that sustains life". Sounds better this way.
  • The Fallen said that only a Prime can defeat him. However, if Megatron was able to kill a Prime, doesn't it makes Megatron supposed-to-be the strongest one among all Transformers.
    • That rule may only work for the original Dynasty of Primes being able to kill another of them or themselves.
    • Actually it was a tactical error on Optimus's part because he turned his back to him so technically it does not.
  • When some Autobots transform, into their humanoid mode, all the scrapes and marks are visible, but when they're in alt mode, they're perfect like brand new vehicles.
    • Obviously the spec fx crew didn't want to take it that far... maybe.

Trivia[]

Argh.

  • When Jetfire does a spacebridge to Egypt, the Autobots are in vehicle form while at the Graveyard of Plane's to Egypt fully transformed into humanoid mode: Mudflap, Skids, Wheelie and Bumblebee. However, Jetfire circles around the humans only, but you don’t see any of the vehicles in that scene.
  • Frenzy's head is intact in a glass container even though it was destroyed.
    • In the official prequel "The Veiled Threat", Simmons is shown to be experimenting on Frenzy's head and Frenzy speaks.
  • In the previous film, Optimus Prime seemed unable to match Megatron in strength, but in Revenge of The Fallen, Optimus Prime is overwhelming Megatron in the forest battle. Even after Megatron calls Starscream and Grindor for help, Optimus is still able to take care of them. Therefore, either Megatron was still weak from two years of rusting or Optimus had been training for two years (in his speech at the beginning, he said that the Autobots and NEST had been fighting Decepticons for two years), or Optimus was holding back in the previous film because he was fighting Megatron in a heavily populated city.
    • In the forth issue of Alliance comic, Optimus Prime states: "We trained and got better".
    • It's possible that Megatron is still not well fixed.
  • There is an interesting "Full Circle" concept in this film; near the beginning of the film, the Decepticons revive Megatron via taking the parts of a fellow Decepticon, and merging the last Allspark fragment with his spark. Near the end of the film, Sam revives Optimus Prime in a fashion that almost "mirrors" Megatron's resurrection, except with the Matrix, and a fellow former Decepticon sacrifices his parts to Optimus so he can defeat the Fallen. Both leaders also rise from their graves in the same fashion; sitting up and putting the weight of their upper bodies on their right arm as they start to get up.
  • In some movie trailers, Optimus Prime says the quote: "We've kept much from you, Sam." However, he never says it in the movie itself.
  • After Soundwave tells the Decepticons to mobilize, there's a shot with four fireballs moving towards Earth from The 2007 movie. A bit later there's a close-up of protoform-fireballs, where are more than four proto-balls. This might also be from the 2007 movie, but modified. However, in that case, they (ILM or CG) did not modify the shot with four fireballs.
  • It's curious that at the desert checkpoint, no one noticed that out of three Chevrolets only one had people in it, who would drive it. The other two were empty. More over, the guards at this checkpoint appear to have failed to recognize the face of a worldwide fugitive, or this may have been wilful ignorance.
  • The Fallen and Optimus Prime are brothers, as The Fallen will say in the final battle; “DIE LIKE YOUR BROTHERS” then Prime says “THEY WERE YOUR BROTHERS TOO”. So, if Megatron is literally Prime's brother as stated in the first movie, is he also The Fallen's brother? Either this is most likely a plot hole or the term is exaggerated .
  • Like the previous film, there is only one Autobot killed in the film.

Transformers references[]

  • Mudflap gets drawn into Devastator's suction vortex, similar to the way Optimal Optimus got pulled in by Nemesis' tractor beam in the Beast Wars episode "Nemesis Part 2". It has similar gears and blades inside, along with light behind them.
  • During the battle in the "middle of nowhere" while the Decepticons are looking for Sam, you can hear one of the Decepticons say something that sounds a LOT like "Laserbeak".
  • For some reason, the Transformers demonstrate many organic actions, such as Starscream spitting, Bumblebee crying, Jetfire farting a drag chute, and dying bots leaking fluids like humans drip blood. [(The glowing 'blood' may be Energon, but this is unconfirmed even as they were leaking it in the first movie as well.) Remember they have their vehicle parts intergraded within their robot mode, there are fluids in every vehicle, like power steering, washer fluid, anti-freeze in 2 colours, red/orange or fluorescing yellow etc.]
    • In addition, when Optimus gets his faceplate smashed by Megatron, it seems to release some darker fluid.
      • Megatron does the same thing after getting a blast from Prime's jet-boosters trough the wall.
  • The ending scene on the Aircraft carrier is similar to First movie's ending: Optimus's ending speech and the pose he said it are the most notable, along with Linkin Park's song as background music. Guess there's something predictable in the third movie.
  • The Cybertronian symbols that Sam carves in the graveyard of planes in Tucson with Jetfire carving are mostly Cybertronian numbers, as well as and some other unknown symbols.

Characters[]

  • Alice is based on the concept of the Pretender.
  • Jetfire defected to the Autobots from the Decepticons, just like Skyfire, his Generation One counterpart.
  • Jetfire mentioned his father is a wheel, which could be a reference to Scrounge, whose alt mode is a wheel.
  • When Sam has his "meltdown" in astronomy class, he begins to explain the mathematics behind mass shifting while he is up at the blackboard. As a part of his babble, he blurts out Sentinel Prime's name, as well.
  • Even in her full robotic form, Alice's tongue at the tip of her tentacle seems to remain fleshy. Ewww.
  • Wheelie acts like a perv fan boy. Hmmm...
  • A Megatron that transforms into a non-earth tank with two pairs of tracks and his face jutting out in front, an Optimus Prime that can combine with Jetfire to gain flight, human-sized Transformers, and an Autobot defected from Decepticon. This sounds much more familiar than it should...

Real-world references[]

  • When Megatron returns to the Nemesis, the place in the scene slightly resembles the nest of the Alien.
  • Jetfire's quote "I'm too old for this crap" is quite similar to Riggs's and Murthaug's "I'm too old for this Sh*t" from Lethal weapon
  • When Megatron gets back to the Decepticon mothership, he says "Starscream, I'm home." This might be a reference to I Love Lucy.
  • Starscream states they don't have enough Energon to keep the young Protoforms alive. It somehow resembles Dracula's need for The Monster's life source to bring his undead children to life in the film Van Helsing.
  • During the hunt for allies in Museum, in the background many historical planes can be seen. One was shown very clearly - Sam and Mikaela go past Enola Gay, the B-29 Superfortress which dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
  • When The Fallen and his army crash into the aircraft carrier, it sinks much like the RMS Titanic did in the 1997 film Titanic, and features similar scenes.
  • Your classmate is a hot fembot? Riiight.
  • Alice is a hot Pretender, not a hot alien like Sil. Stop asking.
  • In Sam's room in the college dorm there are various posters for real world movies, such as Cloverfield.
  • Like the film Armageddon is mentioned in the previous movie, there is a poster of the film Bad Boys II on the wall of Sam's room.
    • Both films are directed by Michael Bay.
  • The love scene at night in Egypt resembles another love scene from another one of Michael Bay's films, Armageddon.
  • In Leo's computer room, there's a textile scroll/poster for the anime series Naruto in the background. Believe it!
  • President Barack Obama is indeed the president in this film. A clip of him is shown during the video threat from The Fallen. And a news reporter mentions Obama being flown to a safe zone, after the threat is made. Don't tell Joe Biden!
  • As the group descends into Simmons' basement, Leo mentions his fear of Swine Flu, as they pass the dead pigs in the meat locker.
  • When Sam is "killed", Mikaela tries to bring him back by admitting she loves him. This may be a reference to the film The Matrix as Neo is killed by Smith (played by Hugo Weaving just like Megatron). Apparently anything Hugo Weaving does can be undone with love.
    • Additionally, this is the second time that a character played by Weaving has a squid-like robot invasively implanted into the orifices of an interrogation subject - the first time having been in The Matrix as well.

Transformers sequel and the 2007-2008 Writers Strike[]

In late 2007, during preproduction for the then-untitled Transformers sequel, the Writers Guild of America went on strike. At the time, Roberto Orci stated that the strike could likely delay Transformers 2's release. However, Michael Bay refuted this, claiming the movie was still on schedule.[1] The reason behind Bay's confidence was discovered by Orci shortly after the strike ended. The director had apparently taken the outline the writers had handed in the night before the strike, and begun movie prep based on it.[2]

Notes[]

  • Knock offs: Star Wars, Terminator, Van Helsing, and many, many more...with direct quotes, or technologies, or concepts. (All unnecessarily since they did have a decent amount of original material they could have pulled from.)
    • Megatron is a self-proclaimed, undisputed leader, yet he only calls one his master: The Fallen. Undoubtedly like the relationship between Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars, except Megatron does not revolt against the Fallen and kill him. He does here though...
    • The Decepticon Protoform that gets his head shot off, and in so doing, fires some stray shots, reveals "T-1000" on his right arm as he falls.
  • The reason why Sam's college was never identified was because of Judy becoming high on marijuana brownies in one scene. As the set for Sam's college was Princeton and University of Pennsylvania, the scene resulted in both colleges forcing Michael Bay to keep his mouth shut about the exact college Sam went to.[3]
  • So far, all the Transformers live-action films feature a concept car in each of them. In other words, a car that hasn't been manufactured but is in design. The first film features the 2009 Concept Camaro for Bumblebee, and the sequel features a 2010 Corvette Stingray for Sideswipe.
  • Starscream contributed more in the battle in the first film right after Megatron only insults him for failure. In the second film, Megatron kicks and tortures him for being an idiot failing to capture Sam, but in the real deal at Egypt, Starscream didn't bother trying to continue to catch Sam, so that means Starscream's willing to take blame again.
  • Along with Devastator and Optimus and Jetfire, Arcee and her sisters were originally supposed to combine.
  • When the film was giving poor to negative reviews by critics, some argued that Megan Fox was "Stealing the Show", taking most of the screentime from all the characters an their respective actors. Fox also did this in Jennifer's Body. 2009 was not a good year for the actress as she won a Razzie for "Worst Actress" in both movies.
  • Different from the previous film, no Autobots get killed of this time, technically.
    • Exept for Jetfire, who sacrificed himself. And maybe two Arcees.
  • Here's the body count of the film:
    • Optimus Prime: Three kills; Demolishor, Grindor and The Fallen
    • Jetfire: Two kills; Mixmaster and Scorponok
    • Sideswipe: numerous kills; Sideways and some Decepticon protoforms.
    • Megatron: Three kills; Optimus Prime (temporary), Sam (also temporary) and a helicopter
    • Bumblebee: numerous kills; Ravage, Skipjack, and the Appliancebots.
    • Long Haul: One kill; Jordanian helicopter
    • Bonecrusher-like Decepticon: Two kills; blue and purple Arcee (maybe not)
    • Mikaela: One kill; Alice
    • Sam: One kill; an Insecticon.
    • Constructicons: One kill; Scrapmetal - may not count since he is one of their own.
    • The Military: Many, Many Decepticon protoforms.
    • The Fallen: Army tanks, Army men, etc.
    • Ironhide: Some Decepticon protoforms.
    • Ratchet: Some Decepticon protoforms.
    • Jolt: Some Decepticon protoforms.
    • Agent Simmons: Devastator, via military rail gun.
    • Demolishor: Someone in a truck and a helicopter.
    • Devastator: Mudflap (temporary), a guy, a goat, and other things
    • Reedman: One of the guards.
    • Ravage: Anyone he shot at.
  • The intro for the DreamWorks and Paramount logos have more of a Decepticon sound effect.
  • In the game Halo: Reach, the MAC gun the player uses to defend the Pillar of Autumn at the end of the level "Pillar of Autumn" looks strikingly similar to the rail gun used by the U.S Navy to kill Devastator.
  • Unlike its predecessor and second sequel, it was only nominated for one Oscar: Best Sound Mixing; which lost to The The Hurt Locker.
