Lionel Jay Stander (January 11, 1908 - November 30, 1994) was an American actor. His film career began in 1932, and Stander played a long succession of tough guys and hoods for the next twenty years until 1953, when he was outed as a member of the Communist Party to the House Un-American Activities Committee and blacklisted. After spending fifteen years acting in Europe, Stander returned to America, where he appeared in Steven Spielberg's 1941. His most memorable role, however, would come in the twilight of his career, when he played Max the butler on the long-running detective series Hart to Hart.
