A recurring element of bios is a character's function, typically an encapsulation of the character's purpose on their respective teams.
Most franchises from Generation One onwards have included function listings at the top of character bios. Armada was the first to not include it as part of character descriptions.
Typical functions include:

- Scientists/Engineers
- Medics/Doctors
- Leaders/Commanders
- Warriors/Soldiers/Fighters
