Sentinel Prime is a very patriotic individual, believing that all Cybertronians are Gods. He is a member of the Dynasty of Primes. He was Optimus Prime's mentor, who taught him everything he knew. Before he left Cybertron in the Ark, he handed leadership of the Autobots to Optimus Prime. Sentinel was famous for being a proud and feared warrior on the battle fields of Cybertron, using a double-bladed Primax Blade and a shield-changeable Cosmic Rust Gun with great skillfulness. He was also the true leader of the Autobots (before Optimus).
- "How doomed you are, Autobots. You simply fail to understand that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few."
- ―Sentinel Prime before activating the Pillars
Fiction[]
Revenge of the Fallen film[]
Sentinel Prime had once led an expedition that took him 14 galactic convergences to get an echo of something or other. It is currently unknown whether or not if he is one of the original Primes or if he's in the later Dynasty of Primes. However, he would appear to be one of the direct ancestors of Optimus Prime. Sentinel Prime was also briefly mentioned in a rambling speech given by Sam Witwicky while under an AllSpark fragment-induced trance. Revenge of the Fallen
Dark of the Moon film[]
- Voice Actor: Leonard Nimoy (English), Nobuyuki Katsube (Japanese)
Sentinel Prime left Cybertron near the end of the war. Though it was believed that the space bridge technology he designed was to turn the tide of the war, Sentinel Prime actually made a deal with Megatron to rebuild Cybertron by finding an inhabitable world and enslave its occupants, if there were any. However, Sentinel's ship, the Ark, was crippled and it drifted through space for many years, eventually crash-landing on Earth's moon in 1961. As part of their plan, the Decepticons proceeded to steal hundreds of pillars from the ship, leaving Sentinel and five pillars, including the control pillar behind as only Sentinel could use the pillars and he was in stasis lock from lack of energon.
After an engine part from the Ark is found on Earth, Optimus Prime and Ratchet travel to the Moon in the Xantium and retrieve Sentinel from the ships hold, Ratchet scans him and tells Optimus: "His levels are faint." They also find five space bridge pillars. They put Sentinel in the Xantium and return to Earth.
Back at the NEST base, Optimus used the Matrix of Leadership to revive Sentinel, who attacked him at first out of confusion before calming down. Sentinel asked what has happened to his pillars, and Optimus told him that they only found five, upsetting Sentinel. He and Optimus proceeded to explain the pillars functions and the threat they pose if the Decepticons get them to the humans. Sentinel was also unimpressed with Charlotte Mearing and her condescending tone towards him.
Optimus took Sentinel, now with a new vehicle mode, (a Rosenbauer Panther fire truck), on a drive to see the planet. Sentinel was impressed with the planet, comparing it to Cybertron before it was devastated by war. Optimus lamented what could've happened if Sentinel led the final battle of the war instead of him. Optimus offered Sentinel the Matrix of Leadership, but Sentinel refused his request, saying that Optimus was now the teacher rather than him.
After Sam Witwicky learned of the Decepticon's plot, he, Bumblebee, Dino and Sideswipe escorted Sentinel back to base while being chased by the Dreads to protect Sentinel. Along the way, Dino and Bumblebee killed one of the Dreads and Ironhide showed up to kill the other two with the help of Sideswipe. Once at the base, Sentinel revealed his true colors, and explained his betrayal to the humans and Autobots and that he had made a deal with Megatron.
Sentinel then showed the reason why you should never judge a transformer by its insignia by killing Ironhide Dark of the Moon and Twins Dark of the Moon Adaptation with his Cosmic Rust Gun before going on a rampage, slaughtering the human soldiers and tearing the NEST base apart. He retrieved the pillars, coldly telling Mearing that he didn't answer to her before fleeing.
At the National Mall, Sentinel opened a space bridge to the Moon to bring in an invasion force of Decepticons. As hundreds of Decepticons poured out of the portal, Optimus Prime arrived and confronted Sentinel, pleading with him to stop. When Sentinel refused, Optimus angrily tackled him, but Sentinel proved to be too strong for Optimus and easily pinned him down. As Optimus continued to plead with his old mentor to stand down, Sentinel claimed that he was doing this for the sake of Cybertron and that the humans were undeserving of life. Sentinel left Optimus to stew in his anger, telling his former pupil he was lucky Sentinel didn't kill him. Later, Sentinel proceeded to send a message to the UN claiming that he and the Decpticons were only after some of Earth's natural resources (in reality its human population too) and demanded the exiling of the Autobots which lead to their apparent destruction on the Xantium at the hands of Starscream.
In Chicago, Sentinel met up with Megatron on top of the Hotchkiss-Gould building where he set up the space bridge pillars and activated them to bring Cybertron to Earth. Megatron was excited that they would save Cybertron together. Feeling his partner was getting too chummy, Sentinel violently reminded Megatron that he worked with him and not for him. Sentinel stayed out of the fighting as Cybertron started to arrive until Optimus used Shockwave's cannon to shoot down the Control Pillar, temporarily deactivating it.
After being challenged to battle by Optimus, Sentinel jumped down into the battle and dueled his former apprentice. Soon, the combined forces of the other Autobots and the humans began to overwhelm Sentinel, so he called upon the Decepticon fighters to attack the Autobots, distracting and nearly overwhelming Optimus until human missiles took most of them out. Sentinel fought the combined human and Autobot forces while Optimus was distracted and held his own, but fled when a human hit him in the chest with a rocket. Sentinel didn't get far as Optimus caught up to him and attacked him on a bridge. The two fought it out until Sentinel sliced off Optimus' right arm and knocked him to the ground. However, as Sentinel prepared to deliver the final blow to Optimus, he was attacked from behind by Megatron, who was convinced by Carly Brooks-Spencer that he would end up working "for" Sentinel, rather than "with" him.
- "We were gods once, all of us! But here...there can only be one !"
- ―Sentinel Prime fighting Optimus Prime.
Despite being shot by Megatron three times, Sentinel still tried to kill Optimus, but then Megatron grabbed him away, tore off his helmet and ripped off part of his chest armor. However, before Megatron could finish Sentinel, the reactivated space bridge was deactivated by Bumblebee, who destroyed the Control Pillar in process of wich teleported Cybertron back in his star system and the remaining Decepticon forces. Megatron dropped Sentinel and attempted to make a false truce with Optimus, but Optimus saw through the ruse and attacked Megatron, severing his eternal foe's head. Badly wounded, Sentinel pleaded with Optimus to understand why he had to betray him:
- "Optimus, all I ever wanted was the survival of our race. You must see why I had to betray you..."
- ―Sentinel Prime
- "You didn't betray me. You betrayed yourself."
- ―Optimus Prime
Optimus Prime then unceremoniously raised Megatron's shotgun and fired two shots from it, executing Sentinel Prime and avenging Ironhide Dark of the Moon and Twins Dark of the Moon Movie Adaptation in the process. Dark of the Moon
Age of Extinction film[]
After the battle of Chicago, Sentinel's head was salvaged and brought to KSI's lab. Sentinel's head was placed on a large table and torn open so that it could be linked up with Brains who was being kept as prisoner. Once Brains had translated and transfer the information to the new drones, it is likely that his head was melted down and used to build more tech, similar to that of Megatron's.

Generations[]
Studio Series[]
- Sentinel Prime (Voyager, 2020)
- Accessories: Primax Blade
- Studio Series Sentinel Prime is a Voyager Class mold accurate to his appearance in Dark of the Moon, transforming to a Rosenbauer fire engine in 32 steps. He comes with a new Primax Blade accessory that splits in two for transformation and a cardboard backdrop display depicting a war-torn Chicago. His Primax Blade must be separated so that each end can be plugged into both sides of Sentinel's hand just like any 3rd party accessory made for any normal Transformers' toys. As tradition with the other figures of the character, he once again don't come with his Cosmic Rust cannon, unlike those figures, however, he does not come with his shield. Though more of a coincidence, the tab on Sentinel's left forearm can attach with the rectangular hole behind the Mechtech Leader Class' shield. His firehose can be detached and can be attached to Sentinel's hand, makeing it a makeshift ranged weapon, albeit with a loose fit. However, the strut that the hose attaches to and the hose itself are made of flexible plastic that does not like to detach easily and can result in stretching that either leave stress marks, or worse, make the joint not clip together firmly anymore. DNA design released an upgrade kit with his cannon and shield and a new version of his sword in the DK-16 Gear Master kit, and he SWIVELS!
- What is noteworthy is that, as a nod to his betrayal in the film, this is the first toy of Sentinel to be explicitly classified as a Decepticon on his box, though he has a red Autobot-themed instruction booklet.
Notes[]
- In Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen when Sam has his "mental breakdown" in his college astronomy class one thing that he yells out is: "Fourteen galactic convergences it took for the Sentinel Prime expedition to receive an…Echo on its signal,"
- He was originally called Ultra Magnus during early development.
- He resembles the Scottish actor Sean Connery.[1]
- He is the second common foe on the human characters, the Autobots, and Megatron altogether.
- Sentinel Prime's bladed staff is able to be folded up into a single sword in the film.
- It seems that everything with "Sentinel" in its name seems to betray something at one point, the Sentinels from Halo were your allies early in Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 3 and at the end they turn against you. And in The Transformers, Megatron turns a few Omega Sentinel against the Autobots.
- This does seem to be true, as even in the final season of Beast Wars, the Maximals old defense program named "Sentinel" is also recovered by the Predacons and used to defend the Darksyde instead of the Ark, which makes the Darksyde basically unassailable until the arrival of Tigerhawk.
- Before he is revived by Optimus, he seems to have car windows on his chest and wheels on his legs, even though he is still in his Cybertronian mode. Though maybe his Cybertronian mode already has windows, which is strange because nothing can pilot them-they drive themselves.
- If you listen carefully during the showdown between Sentinel and Optimus, you might hear Sentinel make the same sound Megatron did when he got part of his face blown off in Revenge of the Fallen.
- Sentinel is red and silver in the film instead of the gold from the teaser trailer and the DVD's title menu.
- Sentinel Prime's line "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" is a corruption of the original line by Nimoy as Mr. Spock in the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. However, in that movie, Nimoy's character dies a hero as he saves the ship by sacrificing himself.
- Sentinel's claim is rather ironic, as there are more humans than Transformers, technically making humanity the many and the Cybertronians the few.
- However, since Sentinel and Megatron both consider humans to be "insects" and slaves, he could have possibly been referring to the numerical superiority of the Decepticons over the Autobots.
- Sentinel's claim is rather ironic, as there are more humans than Transformers, technically making humanity the many and the Cybertronians the few.
- Sentinel Prime's body shape slightly resembles that of Master Xehanort from the games Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. Coincidentally, both were voiced by Leonard Nimoy.
- The symbol seen on Sentinel Prime's shield is vaguely reminiscent of the Hammer and sickle, the symbol commonly associated with the Communist party.
- Not counting his face and forehead piece, the rest of Sentinel's head sculpt appears to be identical to that of Optimus Prime's, albeit red instead of blue. This might imply that the Primes (at least the ones present at the time of the war) all wore similar headpieces. It is worth noting that Sentinel's headpiece was removed during the final battle, and yet he still seemed as though he could have survived, indicating that the headpiece may serve as a helmet rather than an actual part of the head.
- Another piece of personality about Sentinel Prime is that he has a god complex which is pointed out throughout the film. He probably believes because he's a Prime, he has a much more higher rank or royalty.
- When Sentinel showed his true colors to Optimus "On Cybertron, we were gods, but here they call us Machines!!".
- When fighting Optimus he shouts out "We were Gods once all of us."
- He has what appears to be a spear gun on his right wrist.
- His shield resembles the "Limpet Drone" from Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun. To make it look like that, the shield has to be opened and its laser shooter has to be folded back in. It can be attached to the bottom of Sentinel Prime, just like the Limpet Drone which attaches itself to enemy vehicles to spy on them. In the case of the shield however, he is neither a spy, nor is he attached to an enemy.
- He has the ability to transform his shield into a saw. Though it is used in the leader toy version but not in the movie (probably replaced by the rust cannon for the film).
- Sentinel's sword resembles an X-acto razor blade so much it even has the hole at the base of the blade. Perhaps the sword was based on one?
