Strong and deadly in tooth and claw, with terrible speed, handling energon raw. Cruellock is a formidable fighter, destined to be feared by Transformer and human citizen of Tokyo alike. Singularly or in vast squadrons of identical units, this robotic raptorbot is a vital tool of war to his Decepticon masters, a mindless menace to his Autobot foes. Strangely and tragically, this seemingly mindless drone is, at its spark, a thinking creature of considerable intelligence... but the only effect this seems to have is to make him more deadly in combat.

Japanese name: Dinobot

Cartoon continuity

Energon cartoon

Think Jurassic Park, but with choppy animation.

The Cruellock drones were a type of “Dinobot” thought to be long-extinct, but were in fact held under the command of Alpha Q. Launched onto planetary surfaces in steel eggs, the Cruellocks were first sent against both Autobot and Decepticon alike on a frigid, ice-covered world. However, both groups defeated and escaped the horde.

Later, several Cruellocks were released on Ironhide in an obstacle course engineered by Alpha Q, designed so that the young Transformer could prove himself to the alien.

After this, the Terrorcons were imitated and absorbed into the forces used more regularly by Megatron's Decepticon forces.

Dreamwave comics continuity

Cruellock was a member of the Terrorcons, a group of former Decepticons led by Scorponok, who, unhappy with the Autobot-Decepticon alliance, struck a deal with Alpha Quintesson to raid Earth for its Energon reserves in order to restore Unicron. When Scorponok blasted Starscream into an ore-grinder in Cyber City’s eastern energon processing plant, Cruellock threw the switch that activated the machinery, crushing Starscream's body, much to Cruellock's delight.

Granted an energon-powered Hyper Mode by Unicron, Cruellock and the other Terrorcons went to Earth to extract the energon buried in the wilds of Australia. However, thanks to the intervention of the Omnicons and Kicker Jones, their Energon siphons were destroyed, and Alpha Quintesson forcibly pulled the Terrorcons from Earth.

Though Cruellock himself is not seen again, countless drones based on his beast-mode design were sent to raze Tokyo as part of a worldwide assault on Earth coordinated by Alpha Quintesson. The Autobot forces deployed to counter the invasions were not enough to stop the hordes, and only the intervention of the newly revived and hyper-powered Megatron was able to turn the tide and send the Terrorcons back to Unicron.

Energon Cruellock toy

Its behind you What? Its behind you! What? Its behind y- oh stuff it. You're about to eat yourself

  • Cruellock (Basic, 2004)
    • Japanese ID number: SD-12
    • Accessories: Sword, pistol
Cruellock transforms into a dinosaur-monster somewhat reminiscent of the American movie version of Godzilla. He came with a small clear-green hand-pistol and a large clear-green sword, both of which store in his tail in dino mode. These pieces can combine into an “Energy Blade" Ultimate Energon Weapon that can be used by other Transformers toys. He also came with a clear-green Decepticon-style energon chip that can be attached to most Energon toys.
This mold was also used to make Doom-Lock. In Japan, his sword was used to make the "Energy Blade Phantom Night Edition" promotional exclusive energon weapon, plus a pack-in energon weapon with Galvatron General.

  • Dinobot Magma-Type (Basic, 2004)
    • Japanese ID number: SD-17
    • Accessories: Sword, pistol
In Japan, the Cruellock toy was redecoed in red and deep burgundy, as a somewhat more limited (but still mass-retail) release. Its energon weaponry was given a bright yellow color. Its packaging was largely unchanged, getting simply a new bubble-lining declaring "Magma-Type" and a new ID number sticker at the top-right of the card.

  • Cruellock (Basic, 2005)
    • Accessories: Sword, pistol
Cruellock was "repackaged" without changes on a Universe-themed card and sold through Big Lots! and similar discount chains in the US.

3D Battle-Card Game

  • Cruellock (2007)
A 32-point "common" character in the 3D Battle-Card Game's "Energon Wars" expansion, Cruellock "transforms" into a red kaiju-type beast. He uses the same parts layout as Predacon Megatron and Grimlock. His color scheme more closely resembles Doom-Lock, although this could be handwaved away as the card actually representing "Dinobot Magma Type."
