In 1652, Bertha Carnahan's last act as a pirate was to rob the Griffin Rock guild hall charity fund. Having fallen in love with town founder Horace Burns, she feared a scandal if the townspeople knew of her pirate past, so she concealed both the treasure and her ship on an island near Griffin Rock. Hoping that someday the money would be able to be returned, she left a series of clues. She went on to marry Horace and have a family. Several hundred years later, her story indeed created a scandal, but resulted in the treasure being recovered and donated to charity as intended.
