Backfire was a crew chief on Velocitron who, like many of his fellows, dreamed of being a racer but lacked the talent or skill to succeed in serious races. He thus became a mechanic, and one skilled enough that he wound up working on Blurr's crew along with the respected Mainspring. Despite this, he wanted true respect, and after hearing Makeshift talk about the Decepticons thought he might find it by pledging himself to Megatron. He did not consider himself or the other Velocitronians to be Cybertronians, but willingly joined Ransack's rebellion against Override. He later greeted Megatron when the Nemesis arrived at Velocitron, and after observing his questioning of Syncol from hiding introduced Megatron to Ransack.
