Apelinq was the previous leader of the Maximals.

Apelinq was the Maximals' leader on their home planet. One day, Unicron showed up, and sent down some Scorponoks and his best hunter, Scourge to take out the Maximals and take the Transwarp Key. To prevent the Key from falling into Unicron's possession, Apelinq entrusts it to Optimus Primal, and Apelinq instructs them to flee with the Transwarp Key, while he holds off Scourge. Apelinq passes the mantle of leadership of the Maximals to Primal, and the other Maximals listen to their leader and escape the planet.
Scourge approaches Apelinq, who arms himself with his dual arm blades. Scourge demands Apelinq to hand over the Transwarp Key and Unicron will spare their planet in return, which he denies. They begin fighting, but it ends quickly after Apelinq is stabbed by Scourge, who then proceeds to shoot through Apelinq's shoulder. Apelinq lays dying on the ground and proceeds to explain to Scourge that he is too late, and that his master will be trapped in their galaxy forever.
